so today my water pump and cambelt got changed, costing 213.
the noise is still there. It is slightly less noisy and it no longer happens at engine idle.
Im hoping the renault tech reads this thread :).

The water pump was knackered then ! as there is a massive improvement, no grinding noise now, but it sounds to me like the garage have over tightened the cam belt, hence that horrible whining noise as the engine returns back to idle
