Thermostats do go bad, radiators can go bad, but if you are just having an overheat issue, they may not be necessary.

I work in a garage, and I always recomend doing that to my cliends, It saves them money in the long run, and since we're already in there doing the job anyway, whats it for us to take a little more time and to do a little more work that is called preventative maintance.

It's an annoying design flaw, but one it seems that manufacturers are a bit reluctant to fix because it's sometimes cheaper to build one that way. I am not sure if the Volkswagens have this problem or not - I know it's pretty common on Hondas. And the usual work-around for this problem is to replace the water pump every time you change the timing belt.
The other way to drive a water pump is with a separate V or serpentine belt, by the way. If this is the first timing belt replacement (50,000 miles.. give or take), i wouldnt worry about it.
And in 'bender' i believe your saying your car is a valve bender engine. Same answer as the water pump. If its your 2nd timing belt, replace the pulleys.
Now there could be a case made to replace both of them at the sime time as the timing belt.
If VWs have notoriously bad water pumps or valve benders, then it would make sense to replace it now, while the car is already in peices, it would save you labor costs later on. I just had my water pump/timing belt replaced and oil change. When the pump failed, white smoke was coming out, which I figured out to be coolant from the smell. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. The highest I have ever seen it is at 1/3.
I had my car serviced by the dealership and I asked them. The man said its burning oil residue from the oil change and that it will burn away in a few days. Is this true? I have had my car worked on and oil changed for the past year at this dealership and have never had any smoke or other problems. What else could be going on? Worse case scenarios. Changing the water pump is when the residue would have gotten there not the oil change. Either way if the mechanic says that's what it is you should be OK. Just keep an eye on your oil level and if it goes down to the point that you will have to add to it you should take it back to the mechanic and let him know. If you run it without oil it can destroy your engine. IF the hose gets hard as a rock or builds pressure rapidly within,you almost definitely have a combustion leak( head gasket cracked head block)... also possible that t-belt is not installed correctly- this will affectvalve and ignition timing and can cause an overheat condition.for those reasons. is the new oil discolored or have an appearance similar to a chocolate milkshake? if so,combustion leak there. if the fans are not operating(may take awhile to come on by themselves) try turning on the a/c-both fans MUST run with it on-if not a fan or oter electrical fault is present.( always losing cooling fan switch under the heter hose coming from the distribtor area on the head). check also that you have bled all the air out of the system- if you run a honda even a half-pint low on coolant it will overheat....???? they do! there should be a bleed screw right behind the distributor near the egr valve-requires a ratchet/breaker bar,a six inch extenson and a 12mm SIX POINT socket to perform the operation-simply open the screwand fill the radiator till coolant ONLY escapes from it. then tighten it gently before the coolant stops flowing from it...finish filling the rad as normall then.-there are a lot of things that can overheat a honda,too many to list here. Changing the water pump is when the residue would have gotten there not the oil change. Either way if the mechanic says that's what it is you should be OK. Just keep an eye on your oil level and if it goes down to the point that you will have to add to it you should take it back to the mechanic and let him know. If you run it without oil it can destroy your engine. Now there is smoke coming out from under the engine, which I believe to smell like oil. Also, the temperature gauge goes up to the halfway point when I am at a stoplight or idling. The highest I have ever seen it is at 1/3.

But, that's exactly what they did. When you remove the oil filter, oil will spill. That's a given. You must then clean it up or catch it to keep it from getting on the hot exhaust. Or let it burn off. How long it takes depends on just how much they got on there and maybe they got into some grease and got that on there too. That would take longer to burn off.
Now, about that cooling situation... Let's wrongfully assume the new water pump is pumping properly (I've had new parts be worse than old parts). The flow is actually controlled by the thermostat which should maintain the engine at around 190 degrees. These are very simple to change and cheap from Auto Zone. The dealer's thermostat will be much more but will be a better construction as well. Your call there, but it should have been changed with the water pump and especially after a boil over. With proper control of flow, the water absorbs heat from the engine and gets rid of it in the radiator. Be sure the radiator is in good condition and not blocked up with a bunch of grass, bugs, or bent fins. You do mention that the temperature goes up when at a stoplight or idling and that brings another element into the picture. Your car has plenty of airflow through the radiator to cool the water WHEN YOU ARE MOVING. It has NO airflow when you are stopped. No airflow, no cooling... simple as that. So, the car is equipped with a radiator fan that is utterly useless when moving but very important when you are stopped.
Checking it is easy... Get in the car and let it warm up to normal temperature... around fifteen minutes if a cold start. The fan should come on automatically once the engine heats enough to make a temperature switch that is mounted on or about the therostat housing. No fan, no cooling and over heating at idle or no air flow conditions.
You have the potential for three problems:
1. Dirty mechanic
2. Faulty thermostat
3. Faulty fan switch/fan (or the dirty mechanic didn't plug the wire back into the switch!)
Temporary answer: Don't stop! The wind will keep the engine cool and blow all that nasty smelling oil smoke behind you!

The water pump runs off of the timing belt, so yea its a lot of work. You are going to have to remove an engine mount (pass side) support the engine with a jack and remove alot of the covers on the passenger side of the engine. I would suggest you get a repair manual at the auto parts store, probably the best $20 you'll spend (and more then I can cover here).
Since you are in there, I would do the timing belt and the timing belt tensioner. Be careful not to turn the overhead camshaft when you have everything apart or you will have to set your cam timing again.

Once on the bench, it will have 3 bolts holding the pump to the lower, and a plastic water tube guide. Slide the pump off and the impeller will probably follow. Find the key way. It will want to fall past the wear plate.
Inspect the wear plate. Put in the new pump and rotate it in clockwise. Grease it so it has no dry start.

How do you change a water pump pulley on a 94 Chevy Caprice?
It's at the front of the engine - drain coolant, remove the serpentine belt, remove 5 or 6 bolts holding the pump, install the new one. You may also need to pull the radiator shroud to get access to the front of the engine.
If this is one of the last 5.7's, the pump is located just above the distributor (what moron would invent that setup?!?), and usually when the pump develops a leak, the distributor - a solid state obscenely expensive thing - goes out immediately.

On the 3.1 - piece of cake. One caveat - have you ever done this before? If not - buy a repair manual from a parts store that has step by step instructions. The main thing to keep in mind is to clean off the old gasket as thoroughly as possible. Leaving even a little of the old gasket on the manifold will make for a bad seal and your new pump will leak. It's not necessary to use anything other than the gasket that comes with the new pump IF you clean it completely prior to installing. Us a 'light' putty knife to evenly take it all down to the metal - be careful, however, as the block is aluminum - too aggressive with the removal and you could damage the area.

Be sure and use a decent scraper to remove the old gasket then some fine sand paper to smooth it all out for a proper gasket fit. Mine was a '94 if I remember correctly...it may have had an %26quot;O%26quot; ring rather than a gasket...use a little silicone to hold things in place then refill the tank and be on your way.

Thats a pretty big job. It's driven by the timing belt and therefore the timing belt must be removed to replace the water pump.
If you dont have the tools or experience to set up a timiung belt properly i would strongly recomend a reputable shop or dealer do the work. You can do serious and expensive engine damage if the belr is installed incorrectly.
I'd also recomend going ahead and having a new belt installed while your there. Cheap insurance.

Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?
The bearings in the pulley went bad and so now its making a bad sound, i took it to a shop and they want like 400 to do it. 280 of it just for labor. so im going to attempt to do it myself and was wondering if anyone has done it and has any bits of information i should know.Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?If it's the 5.2, its no different than on my 96 Dodge B2500.
Its not that difficult, I did it when I was 19 in a couple hours. Just be sure to bring some Blue RTV sealant and a 5/16 nut driver is handy for hose clamps.
You'll probably need a clutch fan removal tool, or if you're lazy....a channellocks on the fan part, and a wrench with a long pole on the water pump pulley bolt -- turn the wrench so the handle is digging in the ground to hold the pulley in place while you break free the fan (and it's gonna suck.... wear gloves or lose the skin on your knuckles.)
Basic overview...
Drain coolant from radiator petcock, disconnect upper hose from radiator, move out of way.
Remove upper fan shroud
Remove clutch fan
Disconnect hoses at water pump (should be three of them -- one coming from lower radiator hose, one going to the intake manifold, and one that's bolted to the AC/ALT bracket -- may be blocked off, might just be for my auxillary heater)
Unbolt water pump
Scrape gasket material off

I need to change my hot water circulation pump!?
I have a circulation pump from my heating boiler that pumps the water around a coil in the hot water tank. The pump is isolated by a valve either side of it but they arnt working so I need to drain the system and then refill it. If that fails, get a replacement pump and hire a freezer kit. Follow the instructions and `Hey Presto` a wonderful new pump.
To be honest if your valves have been eaten by the water, then a drain down and a good flush through using the correct chemical treatment and a refill with some decent inhibitor added to the water might well be the best idea. But be prepared for the fact that it might find some weakness somewhere else in the system.

Renault clio noise still after water pump change?
so today my water pump and cambelt got changed, costing 213.
the noise is still there. It is slightly less noisy and it no longer happens at engine idle.

They can both be easy depending on model and clearance.
I know yours snapped but I will give you the whole run down.
If it has one belt for the whole engine then you find the tensioner pulley and put a breaker bar with right size socket on it and push against it and that take off tension. With other hand remove belt. Kinda hard your first time but it gets easier next time you need to do it. Then after you have removed the belt you simply run the new belt around the pulleys. There should be a diagram if you forgot how it went. After the belt is the proper way and you get back to the tensioner. Simply put the breaker bar on it again and push against it and slip belt under and your down!
If you have more then one belt on the front.
You find which pulleys it is on and look for a tensioner. If it doesn't have a tensioner then you need to loosen something to remove the tension. I always pick the easiest thing. Practice will help you decide. After getting slack, add the belt to the pulleys and put tension back on. Do not make it to tight though.
I would say that the best thing to do is find a chassis manual for it and it will show a breakdown of it.
I recommend going to your local library and looking for the manuals there. Even if you can't find a legit manual there at least they will have the auto store ones and will save you some money. I am very fortunate for what my local library has.
I DO NOT recommend the manuals you can get at the auto parts stores. The Chilton's and the Haynes manuals are hit and miss.

According to the service manuals the recommended service interval for the Timing Belt is 90,000 OR 7 years whichever occurs first. so in either case you should seriously consider it needed.
Since the Water pump is driven from the same belt, changing the Water pump is simply a way to avoid having to go through the process again should your water pump fail 2 months after the timing belt has been done.
The added expense of the pump should not add that much to the total bill as most of the charge is for labor not parts.
If your belt fails you will experience a much larger expense as you have a better than average chance your engine, (or parts of it anyway) will self destruct.
Try to stick with a Honda Dealer or at least a service facility that specializes in Honda's so you get properly trained people working on your van.I have a Honda Odyssey 1999 with 80000.When I should replace the timing belt?Do I need to change water pump?Honda recommends replace at 90k. Since the Water pump is driven from the same belt, changing the Water pump is simply a way to avoid having to go through the process again should your water pump fail 2 months after the timing belt has been done.
The added expense of the pump should not add that much to the total bill as most of the charge is for labor not parts.
If your belt fails you will experience a much larger expense as you have a better than average chance your engine, (or parts of it anyway) will self destruct.

I changed a Water Pump first by draining the Coolant and there are some bolts that need to be loosened to take the Water Pump off.

First disconnect the battery. Next you need to remove the upper radiator shroud. This gives you a bit more room. There are then 4 bolts that hold the fan on to the pulley, remove those so you can remove the fan. Drain the system, there is a drain valve at the bottom left side of the radiator. You then need to loosen the belts. The front belt loosens with the alternator, it has 3 bolts. One easy to see on the top. One on the back and one underneath. Loosen all 3 and the alternator will slide so you can get the belt off. Back belt is the same setup except this time on the power steering. Same 3 bolts except its bottom, side, and back. With the belts out of the way the pulley will just come off the front of the pump. You can then unhook the lower radiator hose. Now you just need to remove the 11 bolts that hold the pump on. and remove the pump. Clean up the mounting surface. Put a thin layer of rtv on the new gasket let it sit for a 1/2 hour to an hour then put it back together finger tight. There are 3 sizes of bolts. The smallest ones get a bit of RTV sealer on them. Torque on the 4 big 3/8 (9/16 head) bolts is 22 foot pounds. Torque on the 3 medium 5/16 (1/2 head) is 15 foot pounds. Those are not real sensitive because they go into the cast iron block. The last 4 small 1/4 (7/16 head) bolts only go into the thin sheet metal timing cover and are very easy to strip out. Torque on them is 70 INCH pounds. Thats only 5.8 foot pounds. Thats holding a 1/4 drive socket wrench with 2 fingers. The rest goes on the way it came off. While you are there its a good time to replace the lower hose and the belts if they need it.

Water pump replacement, most 70's - early 00's johnnyrude 3 and 4 and some 6-cylinder motors (take the prop off first):
1. disconnect shift linkage under the bottom carb. They used several different mechanisms over the years to fasten the shift rod, some accessed from the port side, some from starboard, most involved a clevis, some with a hex-head screw, some with a cotter pin. Might have to take the bottom carb off to get a clear view of yours.
2. remove the trim tab (scribe a mark across the edge so you can get it back like it was).
3. remove the retaining bolt up in the trim tab cavity.
4. remove the other retaining bolt from the bottom side of the antiventilation plate.
5. remove the four retaining bolts from the perimeter, just above the antiventilation plate.
6. pull the lower unit off.
the shift rod height is adjusted by screwing it in or out, so don't twist it or else it won't fit when you put it back.
during disassembly, pay particular attention to where the o-rings and gaskets are, I won't mention them all here, but they are all essential.
7. There's a grommet around the driveshaft, and one for the water tube - don't forget those.
8. Four hex-head screws hold the water pump housing down.
9. Slide the old impeller off the drive shaft.
10. Slide the new one on. Slip the woodruff key in place just before the impeller covers the keyway.
11. Put a new housing gasket in place. (Hint: a little bit of dish soap does a pretty good job holding the gasket in place while you install the housing.
12. Grease the inside of the housing (trailer axle grease is fine), and shove it down onto the impeller while turning the driveshaft clockwise with your hand. Don't use any kind of tool on the driveshaft splines.
13. Fasten the housing back on.
On reassembly:
* put molly lube on the drive shaft splines (but not on top, there's not enough clearance).
* the rubber o-ring just below the drive shaft splines -- you need that.
* if your shift rod has a crook in it at the top, put that crook to the port side.
* put omc gasket sealant (or some kind of anti-sieze) on the retaining bolts -- or else corrosion will set in %26amp; it'll be a ***** next time.
* use 3m #847 or permatex #2 on the joint between midsection %26amp; lower unit. permatex works fine but it's way harder to clean off there next time around.
*it helps if you disconnect the shift lever from the cable (starboard side).
The OMC gasket sealant is great stuff, so is the 3m 847 -- if you can't find 'em locally, try http://www.ishopmarine.com

You can then slide the fan assembly down, angle it and pull it out from below. I pulled the radiator, just so I could clean and repaint the lower plate holding the radiator.
My suggestion - while your at it, when you pull the water pump, I suggest you bite the bullet, spend some extra money and change out the optispark (unless you haven't done so already). If you have over 70k miles on your engine, your opti is closing in on failing, particularly if your water pump has been piddling on it. The opti can only come out if you pull the water pump, so this could be a good time to do it, and service the opti seal in the cover to prevent leaks. On mine, I did everything - hoses opti, pump wires and plugs - while I was under the car.

I need to know how to change water pump on a 1989,65 hp johnson have problem getting lower unit to drop down?
Not sure if your particular model is the same as mine, but there are usually two things that cause a bit of a problem with leg removal.
First thing is the gear selector rod, some of the OMC range of outboards have a small clamp that connects the reversing lever to the selector rod. If you follow the shaft that goes into the engine housing from the reversing lever, it leads right under the engine block very low down.
Attached to the end of this is a small bellcrank with the mentioned bolted coupling ( usually two bolts ) undo the lower bolt to release the gear shaft.
The above assumes that the leg is moving away from the upper unit by about a fingers width, moving the gear selector will confirm that this is what is fouling.
If the leg is still fixed firmly and you are sure that all the holding bolts have been released, then the problem usually lies in the upper gear shaft having siezed in the engine drive spline.
I suggest you take the motor to a repair shop because you have to get a bit physical with the lower unit and it is very easy to do some serious damage.
