Go to an auto parts place like Pep Boys or Autozone. Try and find a place at a time where they aren't too busy. There is a parts counter guy, and he has stuff like water pumps and can tell you how much they cost, and confirm that you get the right water pump for your year/engine model. Oh and there are %26quot;core charges%26quot; where in theory it would work better if you could take your old one off first before you buy the new one, but as a practical matter, you probably are driving your crappy taurus leaking water to the shop to pick up the new pump, and then later bring back the old water pump after you change it.
And in the same place, you can find a Chiltons or similar shop repair manual for your 1996 Ford Taurus, that should have a more detailed step-by-step procedure.
