As long as the thermostat is closed only a very small amount of coolant circulates. Such a small amount that you can't even see it. Especially at the top of the radiator opening. Leave the radiator cap off with the opening in the highest position by jacking the car up slightly. Start the car and the water will start to circulate as the dash needle reaches the normal operating position. If the needle soars past the normal zone the lower radiator hose may be collapsed closed. It shouldn't overflow anyway, that's only for when it does overheat. Take the thermostat out and start the car, if the water is moving the pump is good, If you're working on it , it's cuz it's overheating I assume. If the water is circulating put the thermostat back in, hook the hoses and everything, , start the car and let it run, when the temperature gauge reaches half your fans should COME ON, if not, your fans are not working
