Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?

I've done 200,000km from new in %26quot;severe conditions%26quot; [ ie hot Australian climate all year ] and had one timing belt change. Now due for the 2nd. One mechanic reckons to replace water pump at the same time as preventative maintenance seeing he's got that part of the engine opened up. Another mechanic reckons I could get 300,000km out of a water pump. The pump is not making any noise at this time. Any help appreciated.Honda Accord 1995, change timing belt and water pump at the same time?On your Honda the WP is driven by the timing belt. Very little extra labor is involved in replacing it as long as they are already in there to do the belt anyway. The WP may be working just fine now, but if it fails next week or next month or next year you'll have to pay all that labor cost again to go back in and change it out.

I always recommend replacing the WP on Honda's with every-other T-belt change, but it is preventive, not required maintenance and therefore entirely up to you. Just remember that if you opt not to replace it and it fails later on, you can't blame the mechanic. He gave you the option.

Yiou've been lucky so far - I've never found a pump that lasted for 200,000 km. How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?

I need step by step instructions, as this is a 75,000 dollar car, and I dont want to break it. I also cant afford to take it in to a mechanic. How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?It's pretty easy, I'll walk you through it. Start by draining the cooling system. If your radiator has a petcock, open it and drain the coolant into a bucket or some other container. If your radiator does not have a petcock, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and let the fluid drain out. If it's draining really slowly, take the radiator cap off to release the vacuum pressure.

While the old pump is still mounted, remove all of it's plugs and fittings. Next, loosen and remove the fan, belts, brackets and hoses.

Now you can unbolt the old water pump. Be sure to use a scraper to clean all of the old gasket material off of the engine block (this is important).

You will have to remove the fan mounting studs from the fan hub on the old water pump. This can be done by using a pair of vise grips, stud puller socket or double nuts. To use double nuts, put two nuts onto the stud, tighten one against the other, then using a wrench on the nut closest to the hub, twist the stud out. One nut will lock against the other and you will twist the stud right out.

Put some teflon tape onto the threads of any plug or fitting that has been removed from the water pump and screw them into the new one. Carefully place the new gasket onto the pump.

Install the new pump. Work slowly and make sure the gaskets stay in place. Before you screw the bolts all the way down, apply some thread sealer on the threads to prevent water from seeping past and causing a drip at the bolt head.

Once the new pump is in, re-install the hoses and hose clamps. Now install the belts, pulleys, brackets and fan. Snug the fan into place. It's a lot easier to tighten the bolts down after the belts have been adjusted to the proper tension.

Once everything's back where it should be, fill the radiator with new engine coolant and start it up. Run it for 10-15 min or until it reaches operating temperature then shut it off. Go back under the hood and check for leaks. If everything looks good, you're done! How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?Dude, spend some lightweight coin on a Chilton's manual (which should cover the basic job of a water pump change) or, get on eBay and rustle up a genuine GM Factory Service Manual for your car. 1987 ford tauras change all gaskets and had complete tu ne up then change water pump replaced distributor madu?

l now it wont run, turns over but wont start?1987 ford tauras change all gaskets and had complete tu ne up then change water pump replaced distributor madu?Go back and check the dist modual, May have installed the wrong on or unplugged? Check all wiring harness's for a unplugged connector1987 ford tauras change all gaskets and had complete tu ne up then change water pump replaced distributor madu?Define all gaskets please.

Requirements for the vehicle to run.

1 Must have fuel spray from injectors

2 must have electric spark at spark plugs

3 must have compression correctly timed.

Since you did tune up and module, I would start there looking for an incomplete connection (happens to the best of us)

Was head gasket one of the gaskets? if so timing may not have been re-set correctly.

Check to see if the ground straps were re-connected when valve cover(s) were removed if applicable

Make sure connections are good for all of the fuel injectors (may have knocked them loose)

This list can go on forever.1987 ford tauras change all gaskets and had complete tu ne up then change water pump replaced distributor madu?First check for fuel pressure by depressing the shrader valve on the fuel rail. If fuel pressure does not exist, then focus on the IRCM that mounts above the radiator: it's not uncommon. I think you will have fuel pressure, and the biggest place you can make a mistake is the firing order of the plugs. The distributor rotation is different between 3.0 and 3.8 engines. Remove the valve cover if necessary, and make sure cylinder #1 is at TDC at the start of the ignition stroke, and connect plug 1 to where the rotor is pointing to. Continue to install plug wires in the direction the rotor rotates, using the firing order cast into the intake manifold. If that doesn't work, then see if the plugs are getting wet with fuel and check the plug gap.

How do you change the water pump in a 1996 Isuzu Oasis/Honda Odyssey?

I can not find a Chilton book for these models locally, so if you have one and could scan me the pages, cool! If not and you have the answer to my question, I need it! Please, don't answer me by telling me to take it to a mechanic. It is a $57 part tops, and they want between $400 - 800 to fix it.

Thank you!How do you change the water pump in a 1996 Isuzu Oasis/Honda Odyssey? The Isuzu has a timing pump driven water pump, so if the timing belt is due to be replaced, both jobs are normally done at the same time along with replacing the timing belt tensioner pulley. It'a an %26quot;interference%26quot; type engine that bends the valves if the belt breaks and ruins the engine. The reason the shops want $700 is because they're doing a complete timing belt replacement to get to the water pump.

How do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?

Coolant is leaking at a good pace from the water pump. I need to replace it. Is this a job that I can do myself? What are the steps? Should I replace the lower hose and flush the radiator too?

Or would it be better to just take it to the mechanic? Whats a fair price for that?

thanks i really appreciate itHow do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?Based on your questions I would say take it to a mechanic. Have the hoses replaced while you're at it. It's up to you about the flush but the coolant will get replaced in the process anyway. About $100. for quality parts add for labor. How do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?I would say take it to a shop to have it done. This way everything can be done right. And as with the coolant it needs to be flushed every two years but use prestone anti freeze after the flush.if you go to a parts store and get the parts and anti freeze this way you'll have the parts that is needed for replacement at the shop you take it to.And while your there at the parts store pick up 2 gallons of anti freeze you'll need at least 1 and 1/2 or so gallons of it to refill the system and blend it with water as a top off.But make sure you don't get the 50/50 mix it is half water and half anti freeze.Anti freeze has a higher boiling point to help keep the engine from over heating. You also might want to replace the thremostat also with the same degree of one.Ask the parts store for one and your hoses top and bottom.hgm20002000@yahoo.comHow do you change a water pump in 1995 silverado 5.7 350?If you have a decent tool box you can do it your self . step 1 remove the negative battery cable from the battery. Have some floor dry on hand if any spills on the drive way or in the garage floor. You don't want the family pet to even taste it. IT WILL KILL THEM!!! Step 3. remove the hose clamps from the radiator and the motor. when the coolant has drained, remove the upper hose First. then the lower. There may be a little fluid in it.Step 4. get another pan for transmission fluid. Disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator. If the Power steering lines also run to the radiator remove them last. Let the fluid drain from the lines. Step 5. Remove the fan shroud Top First. It is in 2 halves.top and bottom. There are 2 ten millimeter screws that hold the top half of the shroud to the radiator on each side. remove them. Then remove the top half of the shroud. Now for some work Carefully wiggle the bottom half out the bottom of the truck or the top. Then remove the radiator. Step 6. You will need special tools for this step ... A hammer and chisel. You need to tap the fan nut with the chisel , counter clockwise to remove the fan and fan clutch. It will take a little time and patience. Once you get the fan off, you are ready for Step 6. The bolts that hold on the water pump are either 10 or 12 mm. what do i need to remove in order to replace the water pump on a 1988 honda prelude?I need to get info on how to change thw water pump and timming belt on a 88 prelude si 2.0 engine?FIRST find the timing mark on the balancer pulley and set it to top dead center, usually on a honda its the red mark or center mark on the pulley. The mark is on the very outer edge of the belt groove and there are usually 3 together on a honda. Carefully remove the balancer pulley, you will need a 17 mm socket and a 12 mm socket to remove the pulley. After you remove the pulley and belt you may find that the power steering pump needs to be removed from the bracket to give you room to work. You dont need to disconnect the hoses from it usually. then take the timing cover bolts off and remove the plastic timing cover. Best thing to do now is to have a Haynes manual to follow to continue because it will describe step by step how to properly time the motor and reset the belt tension. i never herd of a check engine light on because of a water pump you may have a different problem there i would get a second opinion is it saying your temp is to cold\hot try a sending unit low colant look for a leak

before you vote whose best you can choose him the best if you want but he left out the tecnial info of why we reccomended you not do it you need to get the crank pully off this will require an impact gun or a braker bar you may or not need to remove the mount but you will need to remove the timing belt mark it well before you take it off as it needs to go back exactly as even 1 tooth off will cause a problem that can do hundreds of dollars in dammages there are tensioneers to check and possible oil seals that may need to be replaced i think thats why we recomend you take it in as it is hard to explain all the techinal stuff in a short note where you need a 20 page book you can get a chiltons manuel that will walk you through it plan on spending all day on it it takes me 5 hours to do it

    6. Remove the water pump

Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.

Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).

Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).

Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.

Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).

Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.

Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.

Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

Reassemble, and if you did everything right, fire it up!How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt? Before you attempt those repairs, I suggest you go and get yourself a repair manual for your car. Some engines are harder and more complicated than others. The manual will give you step-by-step instructions on how to do those and many other repairs. Read the instructions and then decide if it's something you can do or would be better in the hands of a pro.How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?Water pump is very hard. How much trouble is it to change the water pump on a 1996 geo metro 1.3 also the timing belt?Leave it to the experts, you only need the timing slightly out, and you will wreck the whole valve train, or even the pistons, better to spend $600 than $2500.

What is the cost of a timing belt and water pump change on a 1998 Honda Accord Ex @ 135,000 miles?

I plan on having this within a wk, I dont expect to be going to a dealership for the work. At a reg mechanic's shop what's the total typical cost of this procedure on aforementioned vehicle? What is the cost of a timing belt and water pump change on a 1998 Honda Accord Ex @ 135,000 miles? In California where the labor rates are the highest around the Honda dealers typically have a package price of between $399 and $449 for the 4 cylinder and $499 to $549 for for the six cylinder. The package price includes the timing belt, water pump, coolant and accessory drive belts for the air conditioning and alternator. If the cam seals are leaking (4 cylinder only) they are additional (about $100 more). If the seals aren't leaking most dealers don't recommend changing them.

Honda prices are competitive with the aftermarket with the package. independent shops will just change the belt if you want to save money; most honda dealers won't just do a belt because the useful life of the water pump, coolant and the other drive belts is about the same as the timing belt and quite honestly they don't want to see you come back a few months after replacing just a belt with a leaking water pump because then you have to pay all the labor again.

hope that answers your questionWhat is the cost of a timing belt and water pump change on a 1998 Honda Accord Ex @ 135,000 miles?Miles have little to do with it. Replacement time can be up to 2.5 hours. Parts and labor are dealer specific. Depends on where you take it to. If you can get the part cheaper than a dealer, and they might install it for you, save you some money. Typically if that happens, they will only warranty their labor, not the part. But you will have a manfucatures warranty on the part itself....

Good luck. What is the cost of a timing belt and water pump change on a 1998 Honda Accord Ex @ 135,000 miles? If you perform a 60k interval service, dealerships are currently about 100-125 an hr. so at that rate about 600$ to $800. the belt and pump only may run $300-$400.depends on hrly rate. approx.4hrs labor for belt/pump only.choose a good shop or it could cost you an engine if done incorrectly!

Yes, like they said above, basically check the OIL dipstick and see if you see any condensation or white stuff in the oil. This is the water mixing with the oil.

If it still overheats and no indication of oil, OR water leaks, then your radiator core is clugged up somehow. Or if you have fans they may not be working? Here is the section on troubleshooting from Auto Zone on your car. Also do you have 4 or 6 cylinder? Do the fans work? Anymore problemos get back to me. I will be on for another 3 hours.

Timing belt and water pump change?

I must change the timing belt of my car. I have been told that the water pump must be done too since it is right there. Due to the high price I want to postpone/skip the water pump until the next tune up. What happens if the water pump fails down the road? How long does a water pump last? 120K? My car has 60,000 miles on it. Thank you.Timing belt and water pump change?I always suggest at same time. Most timing belt jobs are 4-5 hour jobs and all of that has to be removed to replace the water pumpp, which could be in a week a month or a year (roll the dice) it doesn't usually take much if any additional labor to replace the pump when everything else is out of the way usually just the cost of the pump itself. if you wait and say a month later the water pump goes out you would have the expense of the pump AND ALL THE LABOR AGAIN.Timing belt and water pump change? The reason you are being told to change both at the same time is because the tear down is almost exactly the same to do both of those actions. It's highly recommended that you change both because you are probably gonna pay for 5 hours labour to change the timing belt then you are gonna pay for another 5 hours of labour when you take you car back to change the water pump, whereas had you simply changed the water pump at the same time it would have only added about 45 minutes of labour to the total labour...

Do both at the same time or don't bother doing any till you can afford both!Timing belt and water pump change? You don't have to renew the water pump. They mention it because it becomes easily accessible during the timing belt replacement. The extra cost should only be the cost of the water pump. So it's often sensible to include the water pump at the same time. If you do it at the next service it will cost you at least the same as you are paying now for the belt job.Timing belt and water pump change? There is no guarantee on how long the water pump will last, but normally 100,000 miles plus. But that is true of a timing belt too. The water pump has a weep hole at the bottom, visually check for corrosion or rust in that area. If you see some, could be a sign that it is ready to go soon. If not, then do the repairs that you can afford. But why the heck are you changing a timing belt at 60,000 miles.Timing belt and water pump change?not a good idea

How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 8 hp outboard motor?

I have separated the Mariner 8 hp lower unit from the upper unit , taken apart the water pump, replaced the impeller and pusher the lower unit up on to the upper unit. It guides on fine until the last inch. It feels like the drive shaft is not alligning with the engine drive acceptor socket. The shift linkage appears and feels to be in place. The exhaust down tube feels like it is lined up. I tried turning the prop to rotate the drive shaft but it wont go together that last inch. Can some one help ????How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 8 hp outboard motor?you may have to put the lower unit in fwd gear so as you are pushing up you can move the prop and the drive shaft at the same time to aid in aligning the splines. How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 8 hp outboard motor?Ensure the %26quot;male%26quot; notch is inline with the %26quot;female%26quot; notch? How do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 8 hp outboard motor?okay..listen up, first you need to make sure you have removed the internal rotation drive modulator from the outer expulsion shaft. once you have done that you can safely align the exterior drive acceptor socket. if you put too much torque on the alternating drive train adaptor, you will snap the linkage and possibly damage your fuel cell resistors.

thanks for letting me waste 30 seconds of your times cause I really have no clue. good luck, though...I would take it to a boat shop and have them do it.

might be your best betHow do you change the water pump impeller on a Mariner 8 hp outboard motor?G'Day Sailinguy,

I have done water pumps on a few different brands of outboard motors, not a Mariner though, but they are all basically the same. The first and most important thing to observe is the water tube is correctly mated to the power head or you will damage the motor through overheating. Make sure the gear shift is in a position that makes the linkage at it's lowest point in the leg, so that it can be connected and tightened later. Ensure the gear box is in the matching position, this is usually in the forward position. If the motor is still on the boat, tilt it up to the maximum position as it makes replacing the gear box assembly a bit easier. Slide the assembly into the leg and keep checking all is going where it is supposed to be going.

Once the drive shaft is starting to engage the crank spline do not twist the gear box, instead rotate the propeller clockwise and anti-clock wise through about a 1/4 turn, as you continue to GENTLEY push the gear box, until it engages and slides home. Insert a bolt hand tight and relax, put the rest of the bolts in and tighten in sequence so as not to stress the casing and possibly fracture it, tighten to the required torque and your done.

IMPORTANT NOTE:- DO NOT USE THE BOLTS TO %26quot;PULL%26quot; THE GEAR BOX HOME. This may damage the spline if it not lined up correctly or strip the thread in the casing. Also if you have cleaned off all of the grease it would be wise to re-grease the spline with the recommended marine grease. I hope this is of some help.

How do you change the water pump in a buick regal 97?

My dad said he doesnt know how to open the power stareing pully, becuase its infront of the water pump. Any one know how? thanksHow do you change the water pump in a buick regal 97?I've found that chilton and haynes books are generally too vauge to do much good, however they are still nice to have handy. I prefer factory service manuals that can be found online for fairly cheap.

As for the PS pulley, there should be a couple bolts (13mm, I believe) that hold the whole assembly to the motor. DO NOT remove the fluid lines as the whole system will need to be bled if you do. After you get the bolts off (accessible by the service hole in the puley itself, you have to remove the belt and spin the pulley by hand until the hole is lined up with the bolt), the whole assembly should come free. How do you change the water pump in a buick regal 97?what engine does it have? How do you change the water pump in a buick regal 97?Why don't you go to the auto parts store and buy a Chilton's manual, that way you can see the pictures and if you have any more problems you can look in your manual.they only cost about twenty bucks.Ive had one for just about every car Ive owned. They have saved me thousands of dollars in repair bills.Good luck. How do you change the water pump in a buick regal 97?I had one of them, it was an 89 or something, good car. When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?

I have a 2002 honda civic with 85k miles %26amp; the dealer says the timing belt should be replaced. But with the water pump %26amp; timing belt tensioner also have to be replaced???When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump? The timing belt drives the water pump in your car. To replace the water pump, you have to remove the timing belt. When you are having the timing belt replaced, it makes sense to also replace the water pump. There is very little additional labor to do so, as the timing belt is already removed.

You do not have to do so, but if you do not, and the water pump subsequently fails, you will be paying the full labor charge to replace it rather than just the cost of the part.

As to the belt tensioner, I would replace that because it is a wear item, and if it fails it can cause a timing belt failure. If you are going to risk the timing belt failing (and causing major damage to the engine) you might as well not have the belt replaced.

I would never replace a timing belt without also replacing the water pump and tensioner. It is false economy to do so.When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?mine just broke 2 weeks ago...and yes the water pump SHOULD be replaced also. well worth the money to have them do it all at once or youll be sorry when you have to go backWhen you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?Effectively no...the timing belt is by itself and does not drive the water pump. The belt tensioner may or may not need replacing, depending on how much it is worn...When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?Much easier to do when you do the timing belt, better to do preventative maintenance while the timing belt is taken off. When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump? The engine in your car makes the difference the 1.7 has a water pump driven by the timing belt and the 2.0 has an external water pump driven by the serpentine belt so find out what you have but if it is the 1.7 just do it.When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?I agree with the dealer. It may sound like he is trying to jack up the job but in fact it will save you money and grief in the long run.

Getting to those parts is so labor intensive that if you have to go back in later to change the pump or tensioner pulleys it will cost you the same as it did to have the belt changed. The other thing if the pump starts leaking on a new belt you will have to have it replaced again.

Whenever I do a timing belt I change everything that is in there. Then I don't have to worry about it.When you change the timing belt do you also have to change the water pump?Just did this myself. You should replace the belt and water pump at the same time. The water pump is not a durable device, the pump seal will eventually start to leak. Getting your timing belt wet is a sure way to lead to a catastrophic engine failure.

I replaced the belt tensioner as well. It's good insurance and since you're already in the engine, the added cost is small and the potential for failure moderate.

This is not a job for an average DIY'r, I have a full shop and many years of experience and still had a hard time doing the job. I suggest you get it done by a pro.

hi can anyone tell me how to, or if there is a website, pdf file or guide to the removal and refit of a water pump in a 2.5 litre n/a diahatsu fourtrack engine please?

ps haynes do not do a manual for this vehical. How to change a water pump in a diahatsu?Used to work on Daihatsu 4 traks. If i recall correctly, the waterpump was fairly accessible when you removed the radiator. The engine in the 4 trak was an old Toyota design and not too complicated. Long arms were a help. No issues with bleeding the system after fitting either.

How do you change out a water pump for a 96 z24 cavaliar?

Need to know how difficult it is to change out the water pump on a z24 chevy Cavaliar. Do I need special tools etc. Can I do it from the top or do you have to get underneath the car.How do you change out a water pump for a 96 z24 cavaliar? Here are the instructions, it really doesn't require any special tools but it is not an easy pump to change, I would recomend having a pro do the job. The pump on your engine is run from the timing chain not a belt making replacement quite difficult. It will require work from the top and bottom of the car, GM recomends using a car lift. If you decide to try this do yourself a favor and get your hands on a service manual. To give you an idea of the complexity of this job, Mitchell labor time guide allows 5.6 hours for an expierenced tech to replace your water pump. REMOVAL

How do i change the water pump on a 2000 s-10 4.3 litter 4wheel drive with air conditioning?

There is a loud squeecking noise coming from the water pump and the serpentime belt isnt loose!

I dont know how long it would take a mechanic to do the job?How do i change the water pump on a 2000 s-10 4.3 litter 4wheel drive with air conditioning?Kelly F is right.

These motors are notorious for squeaky idler pulleys. Find the idler pulley, and spray the surface of it while the engine is running. Belt dressing is fine for this. If it stops squeaking, it's the pulley. Way cheaper, and not as important to fix.

What happens, is the pulley is more of a wheel. It hasn't any shoulders to keep it in-line. If it is turned slightly to either side, the belt is dragging incorrectly across the surface, at a slight diagonal, causing the squeal.

For water pump installation, get the book from your auto parts store. There is no way someone can describe all of this here. The book has pictures, too.How do i change the water pump on a 2000 s-10 4.3 litter 4wheel drive with air conditioning?wel sure its not the pulley or the tension-er which go bad before the water pump and if pump not leaking most likley it not bad an dthat woul dbe easy and cheap to replace at a home good way to check it woul dbe spray it with anything while running and if it stops squeaking it pully or beltHow do i change the water pump on a 2000 s-10 4.3 litter 4wheel drive with air conditioning? Is the truck running hot? The water pump would only take you about an hour to replace. Remove the fan shroud, the fan. Remove the upper hose from radiator pull back out of the way so you don't lose your anti freeze. Remove the bolts from the water pump and remove. Installing is reverse of removal.

How difficult is it to change a water pump on a Mercury?

I'm buying a motor, but it's been sitting for a year and the water pump needs to be replaced.

How difficult is this to do? I've never worked on a motor before.

The motor is a 40 hp Mercury (2 stroke) from 1997.

What other maintenance should be done? How difficult is it to change a water pump on a Mercury? Its very easy. You unbolt the lower unit and if you can put it in a stand. Unbolt the water pump housing and lift it off the drive shaft. Have the rebuild kit ready. Replace all the pieces the way they came off. Grease the splines on the drive shaft and put it all back together. How difficult is it to change a water pump on a Mercury? That depends... will the motor be attached to a moving boat at the time? How difficult is it to change a water pump on a Mercury? Not a hard job but a few things to be concerned about. The stainless steel bolts in the lower can sometimes be stuck and hard to remove without some type af penetrate oil. Also remember to remove the shift linkage . You might have to shift gears to get it back connected. When installing the rubber inpeller, be sure you turn the shaft in the correct direction when installing to avoid damage when the motor starts up. The water pump tube ( maybe brass )will have to be inserted carfully before the lower will come together for a final fit.

I would open the carb drain screws and run some gas through before starting to remove any old gas or gas residue. Lower unit oil should be checked by removing the lowest drain screw and observing what comes out. If it looks contaminated, Drain and replace. Check again after your first river run or outing to determin if seals are bad. Good luckHow difficult is it to change a water pump on a Mercury?why go to the trouble of doing this yourself? You SHOULD have the manual that you can buy from the dealer(your going to get the parts from him)The total price of having the dealer do this for you should be less than $80.00 and you will receive a warranty on the parts and labour.

Should I change my water pump preventively?

I have a 1999 Plymouth Grand Voyager with 101k on it, maintained per the manual in terms of maintenance. I am planning on going on a long road trip this summer. Is there any use to replacing the water pump preventively on this van?Should I change my water pump preventively? No this is not a maintenance item yours could last the life of the car and if you replace it the brand new one may last one day past it's warrantyShould I change my water pump preventively? You should change the timiing belt preventively and while the mechanic is changing the belt, have them inspect the water pump and timing belt tensioner. You have a great idea and you would save yourself the money when and if the parts go bad. IIf you replace the parts now rather than later, imagine spending double the labor charge to install parts that you could have installed prior.Should I change my water pump preventively?change your water pump when you change your timing belt, if you do not have a chain. this cuts down on the labor charge since engine is apart, generally at 60k-90k. if chain you will hear noises like a grinding , preventive well at 100k you can but it is costly, and maybe unneeded. check owners manual,or wait.Should I change my water pump preventively?Yes, yes and yes. If you have the 3.3/3.8 engine, you are lucky. They are the best engines Chrysler ever came out with AND the water pump is absolutely the easiest to replace. And forget the timing belt. It has a timing chain that will never go out. It takes about 45 minutes to replace a pump. BUT if you have the 3.0 engine, that's another story. The 3.0 does have a belt which should be replaced at 100.000 miles AND replace the pump too. The pump is bad about leaking on the 3.0. Also while you are in there replace the water tube that goes into the back of the pump that goes to the back of the motor and the radiator hose hooks to. It's bad about rusting out and leaking. This takes about half a day or so but will be worth it in the long run. 3.0 engines are realy bad about the pump and tube leaking.Should I change my water pump preventively? No

How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?

I have coolant leaking out and i'm pretty sure now that it is the water pump. Question can water pumps leak even if the cars not running?Like a steady drip every two seconds? Forming a decent puddle after awhile, but when running the pump is'nt making any abnormal noises is that normal? Is there other clues to positively know the pump is bad? I cant believe how hard a job it looks like it would be to replace it there is no room! Anybody with some helpful how to's? how about an estimate on how much a shop would charge to do it?How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Put a jack under the oil pan with a 2x4 between the pan and the jack face. You will have to take the serpentine belt loose, the idler is below the power steering pump, and then support the engine on the jack and remove the passenger side motor mount. There is an aluminium L-shaped bracket to remove and then a cast iron piece with 4 bolts holding it to the engine. Remove also the alternator, as it will get in the way. Once the motor mount is out you can remove the serpentine belt. Now you will need to remove the bolts holding the stamped serpentine pulley to the water pump, I believe there are 4 of them and I think they are 8 mm. You cannot, however, take the pulley out until the water pump is off. So now you have to take the bolts out of the water pump and pull it out, clean the mating surface for the new pump, and reinstall, just make sure to put the serpentine pulley over the water pump before you try to put the pump back in.

On a side note, before you go apeshit with all of this, pull the iginition module and coil pack mounting bracket off the front of the engine and check the bypass hose to see if it has a hole in it before you go right to the water pump. I had this go on the wife's car, and overzealous idiot that I am, I just assumed it was a water pump. Several hours, busted knuckles, and beers later, I discovered that it was a bad hose that cost me 6 bucks and took 15 minutes to install, not the 40 dollar water pump. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Yes, water pump seals will leak all the time (worse when under pressure). It is not a hard job if you now what your doing. Get a repair manual and make sure you have all the right tools and parts before you start. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?http://www.automotiveforums.com/How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?A repair shop will charge about $200 to fix that problem. If you have a jack and a jack stand the lack of room wont be much of a problem anymore. It only a matter of getting the belt covers and timing covers off, and the water pump pully off. The pully can be tricky. since It is a car '92 and younger you may have a problem with a gear slipping and the motor needing timed. If your paticular car needs timed by the belts and pullys, then no problem line up the notches in the gears as they go. But if the timing is off by the valves, Then your in for a long night of work and slight frustration.

If you dont really know what you are doing at all, Then don't bother with it, leave it up to the pros, so that your car actually runs when the pump is put in. It took me 8 hours to fix one in a '99 honda CivicHow hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?Go to parts store get CHILTONS manual for your car. Make sure your problem is in book. Chiltons, other books not as good. Local library may have book.

Biggest problem is ,usually, find the proper bolts to remove.

Not too big a chore really. Be sure all old gasket material is removed from the engine where the new pump wiil seal.

Do not turn the water pump shaft on the new pump any more than necessary, they have a mechanical seal that can be damaged.

Probably a four hour job for the inexperienced.

If it's necessary to pull radiator the book will tell you, that would add a couple hours. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 1993 Pontiac Grand Am with the 3.3 Liter motor?I have a 94 grand am with the 3.1 v6 and really it's an easy job, it looks harder than it is. The biggest thing is getting the serpentine belt off.
