I've done 200,000km from new in %26quot;severe conditions%26quot; [ ie hot Australian climate all year ] and had one timing belt change. Now due for the 2nd. One mechanic reckons to replace water pump at the same time as preventative maintenance seeing he's got that part of the engine opened up. Another mechanic reckons I could get 300,000km out of a water pump. The pump is not making any noise at this time. Very little extra labor is involved in replacing it as long as they are already in there to do the belt anyway. The WP may be working just fine now, but if it fails next week or next month or next year you'll have to pay all that labor cost again to go back in and change it out.

How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?
I need step by step instructions, as this is a 75,000 dollar car, and I dont want to break it. I also cant afford to take it in to a mechanic.How to change a water pump on a 1964 corvette stingray.?It's pretty easy, I'll walk you through it. Start by draining the cooling system. If your radiator has a petcock, open it and drain the coolant into a bucket or some other container. If your radiator does not have a petcock, loosen the lower radiator hose clamp and let the fluid drain out. If it's draining really slowly, take the radiator cap off to release the vacuum pressure.
While the old pump is still mounted, remove all of it's plugs and fittings. Next, loosen and remove the fan, belts, brackets and hoses.
Now you can unbolt the old water pump. Be sure to use a scraper to clean all of the old gasket material off of the engine block (this is important).
You will have to remove the fan mounting studs from the fan hub on the old water pump. This can be done by using a pair of vise grips, stud puller socket or double nuts. To use double nuts, put two nuts onto the stud, tighten one against the other, then using a wrench on the nut closest to the hub, twist the stud out. One nut will lock against the other and you will twist the stud right out.
Put some teflon tape onto the threads of any plug or fitting that has been removed from the water pump and screw them into the new one. Carefully place the new gasket onto the pump.
Install the new pump. Work slowly and make sure the gaskets stay in place. Before you screw the bolts all the way down, apply some thread sealer on the threads to prevent water from seeping past and causing a drip at the bolt head.
Once the new pump is in, re-install the hoses and hose clamps. Now install the belts, pulleys, brackets and fan. Snug the fan into place. It's a lot easier to tighten the bolts down after the belts have been adjusted to the proper tension.
Once everything's back where it should be, fill the radiator with new engine coolant and start it up. Run it for 10-15 min or until it reaches operating temperature then shut it off. Go back under the hood and check for leaks. 3 must have compression correctly timed.
Since you did tune up and module, I would start there looking for an incomplete connection (happens to the best of us)
Was head gasket one of the gaskets? if so timing may not have been re-set correctly.
Check to see if the ground straps were re-connected when valve cover(s) were removed if applicable
Make sure connections are good for all of the fuel injectors (may have knocked them loose)

If fuel pressure does not exist, then focus on the IRCM that mounts above the radiator: it's not uncommon. I think you will have fuel pressure, and the biggest place you can make a mistake is the firing order of the plugs. The distributor rotation is different between 3.0 and 3.8 engines. Remove the valve cover if necessary, and make sure cylinder #1 is at TDC at the start of the ignition stroke, and connect plug 1 to where the rotor is pointing to. Continue to install plug wires in the direction the rotor rotates, using the firing order cast into the intake manifold. If that doesn't work, then see if the plugs are getting wet with fuel and check the plug gap.

I can not find a Chilton book for these models locally, so if you have one and could scan me the pages, cool! If not and you have the answer to my question, I need it! Please, don't answer me by telling me to take it to a mechanic. It is a $57 part tops, and they want between $400 - 800 to fix it.

Step 2 Get under the truck and find the drain cock to the radiator. Remove the radiator cap, then put a large pan under the drain cock and open it. Have some floor dry on hand if any spills on the drive way or in the garage floor. You don't want the family pet to even taste it. IT WILL KILL THEM!!! Step 3. remove the hose clamps from the radiator and the motor. when the coolant has drained, remove the upper hose First. then the lower.There may be a little fluid in it.Step 4. get another pan for transmission fluid. Disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator. If the Power steering lines also run to the radiator remove them last. Let the fluid drain from the lines. Step 5. Remove the fan shroud Top First. It is in 2 halves.top and bottom. There are 2 ten millimeter screws that hold the top half of the shroud to the radiator on each side. remove them. Then remove the top half of the shroud. Now for some work Carefully wiggle the bottom half out the bottom of the truck or the top. Then remove the radiator. Step 6. You will need special tools for this step ... A hammer and chisel. You need to tap the fan nut with the chisel , counter clockwise to remove the fan and fan clutch. It will take a little time and patience. Once you get the fan off, you are ready for Step 6. The bolts that hold on the water pump are either 10 or 12 mm. There may also be a %26quot;heater hose connected to the water pump. remove it. Then remove the water pump. Now TIPS ... Get a New Lifetime Warranty Water Punp.... Get New Radiator Hoses and Clamps. Get a New %26quot;No Fail%26quot; Thermostat. Have the radiator vatted and cleaned and pressure tested. Get a New Radiator Cap. Clean the radiator over flow bottle. Use a couple of empty milk jugs to pour the old antifreeze in. Take it to a salvage yard for disposal.. Everything goes back together in reverse order. I recommend %26quot;Ultra-blue%26quot; gasket sealer. Once you have everything back together, Before you fill the antifreeze, add a can of Prestone Water Pump Lube and Sealer. Step 2 Get under the truck and find the drain cock to the radiator. Remove the radiator cap, then put a large pan under the drain cock and open it. Have some floor dry on hand if any spills on the drive way or in the garage floor. You don't want the family pet to even taste it. IT WILL KILL THEM!!! Step 3. remove the hose clamps from the radiator and the motor. when the coolant has drained, remove the upper hose First. then the lower.There may be a little fluid in it.Step 4. get another pan for transmission fluid. Disconnect the transmission lines from the radiator. If the Power steering lines also run to the radiator remove them last. Let the fluid drain from the lines. Step 5. Remove the fan shroud Top First. It is in 2 halves.top and bottom. There are 2 ten millimeter screws that hold the top half of the shroud to the radiator on each side. remove them. Then remove the top half of the shroud. Now for some work Carefully wiggle the bottom half out the bottom of the truck or the top. Then remove the radiator. Step 6. You will need special tools for this step ... A hammer and chisel. You need to tap the fan nut with the chisel , counter clockwise to remove the fan and fan clutch. It will take a little time and patience. Once you get the fan off, you are ready for Step 6. The bolts that hold on the water pump are either 10 or 12 mm. There may also be a %26quot;heater hose connected to the water pump. remove it. Then remove the water pump. Now TIPS ... Get a New Lifetime Warranty Water Punp.... Get New Radiator Hoses and Clamps. Get a New %26quot;No Fail%26quot; Thermostat. Have the radiator vatted and cleaned and pressure tested. Get a New Radiator Cap. Clean the radiator over flow bottle. Use a couple of empty milk jugs to pour the old antifreeze in. Take it to a salvage yard for disposal.. Everything goes back together in reverse order. I recommend %26quot;Ultra-blue%26quot; gasket sealer. Once you have everything back together, Before you fill the antifreeze, add a can of Prestone Water Pump Lube and Sealer. Carefully remove the balancer pulley, you will need a 17 mm socket and a 12 mm socket to remove the pulley. After you remove the pulley and belt you may find that the power steering pump needs to be removed from the bracket to give you room to work. You dont need to disconnect the hoses from it usually. then take the timing cover bolts off and remove the plastic timing cover. Best thing to do now is to have a Haynes manual to follow to continue because it will describe step by step how to properly time the motor and reset the belt tension. Start by getting all of the external stuff out of the way - the hood is tiny so remove it (trust me - it is a lot easier to work on a car with the hood off). Jack it up and put it on stands too.
Remove any accessory junk, coolant overflow, hoses, etc., be very careful with any wiring and connections - then start taking stuff off the engine - alternator, power steering pump, air conditioner compressor (you don't necessarily have to remove them, sometimes you can use zip-ties to hold them up out of the way).
Once you can access the front of the engine, remove the timing belt cover (sometimes easier said than done). I break most of them, because they aren't designed to come off while the engine is in the car (without jacking the engine up and removing a motor mount).
Be ABSOLUTELY SURE to check for timing marks on the crank and cam - if both gears do not have them, then you will need to mark the gears and the block/head so you can put it back into time when you put the new belt on. Failure to do so can cause a lot of wasted time, and could possibly damage the engine.
Turn the engine over (pulling the spark plugs makes this easier to do - and you probably need to inspect those anyway), until it is at 'TDC', meaning that both the crank and the cam timing marks are pointing straight up (the engine might be at a bit of a tilt).
Triple check your timing marks - and then release the tensioner (most people suggest replacing the tensioner along with the timing belt and water pump, but I never have). Remove the old belt, and then remove the water pump.
Install the new water pump - put the new timing belt on, line up your timing marks, and let the tensioner back down.
Cuss when it goes out of time when it tightens up and turns one or both gears. Release it again, and play with the way they are lined up so that when it tightens up that both crank and cam timing marks are EXACTLY lined up. If you put the whole thing back together and it isn't in time, you will be very mad.

Yes, like they said above, basically check the OIL dipstick and see if you see any condensation or white stuff in the oil. This is the water mixing with the oil.
If it still overheats and no indication of oil, OR water leaks, then your radiator core is clugged up somehow. Or if you have fans they may not be working? I must change the timing belt of my car. I have been told that the water pump must be done too since it is right there. Then lift the car, take of the tire that is in front of the motor. Remove the motor mount at the front of the motor. Remove the crankshaft pulley, and continue to remove the timing cover. Spin the motor until the lines match up on both the camshaft pulley and the crankshaft pulley. Then, loosen the tensioner pulley, pull off the belt and then the water pump. Reverse removal process to install.

I have separated the Mariner 8 hp lower unit from the upper unit , taken apart the water pump, replaced the impeller and pusher the lower unit up on to the upper unit. It guides on fine until the last inch. It feels like the drive shaft is not alligning with the engine drive acceptor socket. The shift linkage appears and feels to be in place. The exhaust down tube feels like it is lined up. I tried turning the prop to rotate the drive shaft but it wont go together that last inch. I have done water pumps on a few different brands of outboard motors, not a Mariner though, but they are all basically the same. The first and most important thing to observe is the water tube is correctly mated to the power head or you will damage the motor through overheating. Make sure the gear shift is in a position that makes the linkage at it's lowest point in the leg, so that it can be connected and tightened later. Ensure the gear box is in the matching position, this is usually in the forward position. If the motor is still on the boat, tilt it up to the maximum position as it makes replacing the gear box assembly a bit easier. Slide the assembly into the leg and keep checking all is going where it is supposed to be going.
Once the drive shaft is starting to engage the crank spline do not twist the gear box, instead rotate the propeller clockwise and anti-clock wise through about a 1/4 turn, as you continue to GENTLEY push the gear box, until it engages and slides home. Insert a bolt hand tight and relax, put the rest of the bolts in and tighten in sequence so as not to stress the casing and possibly fracture it, tighten to the required torque and your done.
IMPORTANT NOTE:- DO NOT USE THE BOLTS TO %26quot;PULL%26quot; THE GEAR BOX HOME. This may damage the spline if it not lined up correctly or strip the thread in the casing. Also if you have cleaned off all of the grease it would be wise to re-grease the spline with the recommended marine grease. I hope this is of some help.

On a scale of 1 - 10 difficult, I would give this a 5, I changed my water pump in my Taurus in 3 hrs, I'll give you an idea at whats in store, 1. disconnect battery and battery tray and remove them, 2. drain the cooling system an remove the accessory drive belts, 3. remove bolts retaining the air conditioning and alternator idler pulley and bracket assembly, 4. disconnect electrical connection from ignition module and ground strap, 5. loosen the clamps on the upper intake connector tube, remove the retaining bolts remove connector tube, 6. raise the vehicle and remove right wheel and tire assembly, 7. remove the splash shield, 8. remove the upper timing belt cover, crankshaft pulley and lower timing belt cover, 9. remove the bolts from the center timing belt cover and set it aside, 10. remove the water pump bolts and water pump, please don't let all of this scare you, just put your mind to it and before you know it your back on the road.How hard to change water pump in '91 taurus sho?Unless you're a mechanic with lots of tools, it's an all day job. You pay for it and then when you bring it back they give you all your money back)) and rent a power steering pump pulley puller (no I'm not joking). Then your dad can get to the bolts and move the power steering out of the way. Most new GM power steering units are like that and it's pretty easy to get off. I've done it lots of times. You don't even really need a book for this job. Here's a link to the tool your dad needs.

The pump on your engine is run from the timing chain not a belt making replacement quite difficult. It will require work from the top and bottom of the car, GM recomends using a car lift. If you decide to try this do yourself a favor and get your hands on a service manual. To give you an idea of the complexity of this job, Mitchell labor time guide allows 5.6 hours for an expierenced tech to replace your water pump. REMOVAL

Upper exhaust manifold heat shield and heater hose quick connect from heater outlet pipe.

These motors are notorious for squeaky idler pulleys. Find the idler pulley, and spray the surface of it while the engine is running. Belt dressing is fine for this. If it stops squeaking, it's the pulley. Way cheaper, and not as important to fix.
What happens, is the pulley is more of a wheel. It hasn't any shoulders to keep it in-line. If it is turned slightly to either side, the belt is dragging incorrectly across the surface, at a slight diagonal, causing the squeal.
For water pump installation, get the book from your auto parts store. There is no way someone can describe all of this here. You will have to take the serpentine belt loose, the idler is below the power steering pump, and then support the engine on the jack and remove the passenger side motor mount. There is an aluminium L-shaped bracket to remove and then a cast iron piece with 4 bolts holding it to the engine. Remove also the alternator, as it will get in the way. Once the motor mount is out you can remove the serpentine belt. Now you will need to remove the bolts holding the stamped serpentine pulley to the water pump, I believe there are 4 of them and I think they are 8 mm. You cannot, however, take the pulley out until the water pump is off. So now you have to take the bolts out of the water pump and pull it out, clean the mating surface for the new pump, and reinstall, just make sure to put the serpentine pulley over the water pump before you try to put the pump back in.
On a side note, before you go apeshit with all of this, pull the iginition module and coil pack mounting bracket off the front of the engine and check the bypass hose to see if it has a hole in it before you go right to the water pump. The pully can be tricky. since It is a car '92 and younger you may have a problem with a gear slipping and the motor needing timed. If your paticular car needs timed by the belts and pullys, then no problem line up the notches in the gears as they go. But if the timing is off by the valves, Then your in for a long night of work and slight frustration.
If you dont really know what you are doing at all, Then don't bother with it, leave it up to the pros, so that your car actually runs when the pump is put in. Make sure your problem is in book. Chiltons, other books not as good. Local library may have book.
Biggest problem is ,usually, find the proper bolts to remove.
Not too big a chore really. Be sure all old gasket material is removed from the engine where the new pump wiil seal.
Do not turn the water pump shaft on the new pump any more than necessary, they have a mechanical seal that can be damaged.
Probably a four hour job for the inexperienced.

The biggest thing is getting the serpentine belt off.
On a side note, before you go apeshit with all of this, pull the iginition module and coil pack mounting bracket off the front of the engine and check the bypass hose to see if it has a hole in it before you go right to the water pump.
