Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?

The bearings in the pulley went bad and so now its making a bad sound, i took it to a shop and they want like 400 to do it. 280 of it just for labor. so im going to attempt to do it myself and was wondering if anyone has done it and has any bits of information i should know.Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?If it's the 5.2, its no different than on my 96 Dodge B2500.

Its not that difficult, I did it when I was 19 in a couple hours. Just be sure to bring some Blue RTV sealant and a 5/16 nut driver is handy for hose clamps.

You'll probably need a clutch fan removal tool, or if you're lazy....a channellocks on the fan part, and a wrench with a long pole on the water pump pulley bolt -- turn the wrench so the handle is digging in the ground to hold the pulley in place while you break free the fan (and it's gonna suck.... wear gloves or lose the skin on your knuckles.)

    Basic overview...

Drain coolant from radiator petcock, disconnect upper hose from radiator, move out of way.

    Remove upper fan shroud

    Remove clutch fan

Disconnect hoses at water pump (should be three of them -- one coming from lower radiator hose, one going to the intake manifold, and one that's bolted to the AC/ALT bracket -- may be blocked off, might just be for my auxillary heater)

    Unbolt water pump

    Scrape gasket material off

installation's opposite of removal. remember to give the RTV time to cure and add coolant.Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?that's one of the most simplest jobs you can do on a dodge is change the water pump especially on a v-8 truck, but you do need to get a good repair manual on it before you start with it,you,ll also need a tool to remove the fan with, and that can be bought or rented from any parts store,if you take your time with it ,it should take you about 2-3 hours to get it done back right, 280 was to much just on labor for installing a water pump, good luck.Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?I recommend buying yourself a good service manual for that vehicle , buy the water pump , silicone high temperature gasket maker, thermostat , anti-freeze tester and replace the anti-freeze.Be sure you check the belts too when you do the job and many parts stores will loan out speciality tools but you got to give them the full amount of the cost of the tool as a deposit that you get back once you return the tool.

Hope that helps and best of luck.By the way I'd flush the rad with water by the rad drain plug or the lower rad house and be sure you use a drain pan bec that stuff can kill animals if they drink it.Going to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?yes ,Ive done it and your going to need to go to your local parts dealer and Rent there Fan clutch removal tool,,, other than that, it a Peace of cakeGoing to change my water pump on my 97 dodge ram?I would try another shop for an estimate. I have done dozens of them and it only takes a couple of hours.

I need to change my hot water circulation pump!?

I have a circulation pump from my heating boiler that pumps the water around a coil in the hot water tank. The pump is isolated by a valve either side of it but they arnt working so I need to drain the system and then refill it. Any advice?I need to change my hot water circulation pump!?If you're going to drain the system, replace the valves with full-port ball valves while you're at it.I need to change my hot water circulation pump!?Are you sure that the valves aren`t working...but why ?

Is the water so bad that their guts have been eroded away ? Try nipping them up by gripping the stems with a pair of Footprints. If they are slotted try just turning them until the slot is `across` the flow of water

If that fails, get a replacement pump and hire a freezer kit. Follow the instructions and `Hey Presto` a wonderful new pump.

To be honest if your valves have been eaten by the water, then a drain down and a good flush through using the correct chemical treatment and a refill with some decent inhibitor added to the water might well be the best idea. But be prepared for the fact that it might find some weakness somewhere else in the system.

Good luck.I need to change my hot water circulation pump!?Not yet, guess the isolating valve as mentioned is a non return valve (water will only flow one way) no back pressure can flow back, Suggest switch off the system, then drain the tank M.T till no pressure in the tank.

open both valves and check if the non return valves are frozen due to dirt or maybe lid broken, take a sample to any hard ware store and replace both valves, this will save your money. Good luck

Was wondering if I had to take out the radiator or will it be enough clearance to do it without taking out the radiator. When changing a water pump do I need to take out the radiator? Not familiar with that particular one but on most cars the pump can be removed without removing the radiator. I have a '93 Mazda Protege and my water pump belt just snapped. Does anybody know how to replace it and how simple it is to do?Change Water Pump Belt. Help!?http://www.mazda3forums.com

you can register on her and ask the members good idea.Change Water Pump Belt. Help!?it is more than likly on a pully so just loosen the pully put on the belt and tighten the pully backupChange Water Pump Belt. Help!?Does your the Mazda have one or two belts?

They can both be easy depending on model and clearance.

I know yours snapped but I will give you the whole run down.

If it has one belt for the whole engine then you find the tensioner pulley and put a breaker bar with right size socket on it and push against it and that take off tension. With other hand remove belt. Kinda hard your first time but it gets easier next time you need to do it. Then after you have removed the belt you simply run the new belt around the pulleys. There should be a diagram if you forgot how it went. After the belt is the proper way and you get back to the tensioner. Simply put the breaker bar on it again and push against it and slip belt under and your down!

If you have more then one belt on the front.

You find which pulleys it is on and look for a tensioner. If it doesn't have a tensioner then you need to loosen something to remove the tension. I always pick the easiest thing. Practice will help you decide. After getting slack, add the belt to the pulleys and put tension back on. Do not make it to tight though.

I would say that the best thing to do is find a chassis manual for it and it will show a breakdown of it.

I recommend going to your local library and looking for the manuals there. Even if you can't find a legit manual there at least they will have the auto store ones and will save you some money. I am very fortunate for what my local library has.

I DO NOT recommend the manuals you can get at the auto parts stores. The Chilton's and the Haynes manuals are hit and miss.

I have done to much work because someone thought they could do it themselves and bought a manual only for it to say %26quot;Take to dealer%26quot; Well whats the point and buying a manual to do it yourself if it tells you to take it to the dealer?

Also check the forum boards. I have found them to be a wonderful resource myself.

I have a Honda Odyssey 1999 with 80000.When I should replace the timing belt?Do I need to change water pump?

According to the service manuals the recommended service interval for the Timing Belt is 90,000 OR 7 years whichever occurs first. so in either case you should seriously consider it needed.

Since the Water pump is driven from the same belt, changing the Water pump is simply a way to avoid having to go through the process again should your water pump fail 2 months after the timing belt has been done.

The added expense of the pump should not add that much to the total bill as most of the charge is for labor not parts.

If your belt fails you will experience a much larger expense as you have a better than average chance your engine, (or parts of it anyway) will self destruct.

Try to stick with a Honda Dealer or at least a service facility that specializes in Honda's so you get properly trained people working on your van.I have a Honda Odyssey 1999 with 80000.When I should replace the timing belt?Do I need to change water pump?Honda recommends replace at 90k. ALWAYS change the water pump when u change t-belt. use Honda or gates belt only. also, now is the time to change many things. here is the list: timing belts( there are 2 on 4 Cly.), timing belt tensioners, water pump, cam seals, crank seals, adjust valves, valve cover gasket, thermostat and gasket after flushing cooling system, spark plugs, distributor o-ring(if equipped) and drive belts. service tranny and flush power steering fluid. its a lot to do but my sisters Honda is over 400k miles and still runs like a champ. preventative maintenance!!I have a Honda Odyssey 1999 with 80000.When I should replace the timing belt?Do I need to change water pump?Don't know that exact vehicle but rule of thumb is that if you have to remove the water pump to change the belt or chain then replace the pump. You have done all the work so why stick an old one back on. But at 80,000 miles I would change it for sure.

Thats the 7.0 425 Cadillac motor. Parts stores should have the pump or easily be able to get it. The same pump fit most Cadillacs from 68-81. The Hearse is listed in the books as a Commercial Chassis, if they dont have a listing for that then just get one for a Deville with the GAS 7.0 motor.

First disconnect the battery. Next you need to remove the upper radiator shroud. This gives you a bit more room. There are then 4 bolts that hold the fan on to the pulley, remove those so you can remove the fan. Drain the system, there is a drain valve at the bottom left side of the radiator. You then need to loosen the belts. The front belt loosens with the alternator, it has 3 bolts. One easy to see on the top. One on the back and one underneath. Loosen all 3 and the alternator will slide so you can get the belt off. Back belt is the same setup except this time on the power steering. Same 3 bolts except its bottom, side, and back. With the belts out of the way the pulley will just come off the front of the pump. You can then unhook the lower radiator hose. Now you just need to remove the 11 bolts that hold the pump on. and remove the pump. Clean up the mounting surface. Put a thin layer of rtv on the new gasket let it sit for a 1/2 hour to an hour then put it back together finger tight. There are 3 sizes of bolts. The smallest ones get a bit of RTV sealer on them. Torque on the 4 big 3/8 (9/16 head) bolts is 22 foot pounds. Torque on the 3 medium 5/16 (1/2 head) is 15 foot pounds. Those are not real sensitive because they go into the cast iron block. The last 4 small 1/4 (7/16 head) bolts only go into the thin sheet metal timing cover and are very easy to strip out. Torque on them is 70 INCH pounds. Thats only 5.8 foot pounds. Thats holding a 1/4 drive socket wrench with 2 fingers. The rest goes on the way it came off. While you are there its a good time to replace the lower hose and the belts if they need it.

Need instructions on how to change water pump for 2000 115 hp johnson-J115PLSSB--appreciate the help!?

Water pump replacement, most 70's - early 00's johnnyrude 3 and 4 and some 6-cylinder motors (take the prop off first):

    1. disconnect shift linkage under the bottom carb. They used several different mechanisms over the years to fasten the shift rod, some accessed from the port side, some from starboard, most involved a clevis, some with a hex-head screw, some with a cotter pin. Might have to take the bottom carb off to get a clear view of yours.

    2. remove the trim tab (scribe a mark across the edge so you can get it back like it was).

    3. remove the retaining bolt up in the trim tab cavity.

    4. remove the other retaining bolt from the bottom side of the antiventilation plate.

    5. remove the four retaining bolts from the perimeter, just above the antiventilation plate.

    6. pull the lower unit off.

the shift rod height is adjusted by screwing it in or out, so don't twist it or else it won't fit when you put it back.

during disassembly, pay particular attention to where the o-rings and gaskets are, I won't mention them all here, but they are all essential.

    7. There's a grommet around the driveshaft, and one for the water tube - don't forget those.

    8. Four hex-head screws hold the water pump housing down.

    9. Slide the old impeller off the drive shaft.

    10. Slide the new one on. Slip the woodruff key in place just before the impeller covers the keyway.

    11. Put a new housing gasket in place. (Hint: a little bit of dish soap does a pretty good job holding the gasket in place while you install the housing.

    12. Grease the inside of the housing (trailer axle grease is fine), and shove it down onto the impeller while turning the driveshaft clockwise with your hand. Don't use any kind of tool on the driveshaft splines.

    13. Fasten the housing back on.

    On reassembly:

    * put molly lube on the drive shaft splines (but not on top, there's not enough clearance).

    * the rubber o-ring just below the drive shaft splines -- you need that.

    * if your shift rod has a crook in it at the top, put that crook to the port side.

    * put omc gasket sealant (or some kind of anti-sieze) on the retaining bolts -- or else corrosion will set in %26amp; it'll be a ***** next time.

    * use 3m #847 or permatex #2 on the joint between midsection %26amp; lower unit. permatex works fine but it's way harder to clean off there next time around.

*it helps if you disconnect the shift lever from the cable (starboard side).

The OMC gasket sealant is great stuff, so is the 3m 847 -- if you can't find 'em locally, try http://www.ishopmarine.com

Is it possible to change the water pump on a 97 Z-28 Camaro without removing the shrowd, fans, and radiator?

The fan has to be removed and so does the shrowd, but not the radiator.

Good luck.Is it possible to change the water pump on a 97 Z-28 Camaro without removing the shrowd, fans, and radiator?yea/but the mechanic has to have very short arms/other wise noIs it possible to change the water pump on a 97 Z-28 Camaro without removing the shrowd, fans, and radiator?I had to pull the water pump on my LT1 to replace the optispark - it is very difficult to access that area - you need to at least pull the fans to access it.

This is possible in the driveway if you put the front up on jackstands (it doesn't have to be too high - enough for you to access from both above and below without struggling). You can then slide the fan assembly down, angle it and pull it out from below. I pulled the radiator, just so I could clean and repaint the lower plate holding the radiator.

My suggestion - while your at it, when you pull the water pump, I suggest you bite the bullet, spend some extra money and change out the optispark (unless you haven't done so already). If you have over 70k miles on your engine, your opti is closing in on failing, particularly if your water pump has been piddling on it. The opti can only come out if you pull the water pump, so this could be a good time to do it, and service the opti seal in the cover to prevent leaks. On mine, I did everything - hoses opti, pump wires and plugs - while I was under the car.

    Good luck!

I need to know how to change water pump on a 1989,65 hp johnson have problem getting lower unit to drop down?

Not sure if your particular model is the same as mine, but there are usually two things that cause a bit of a problem with leg removal.

First thing is the gear selector rod, some of the OMC range of outboards have a small clamp that connects the reversing lever to the selector rod. If you follow the shaft that goes into the engine housing from the reversing lever, it leads right under the engine block very low down.

Attached to the end of this is a small bellcrank with the mentioned bolted coupling ( usually two bolts ) undo the lower bolt to release the gear shaft.

The above assumes that the leg is moving away from the upper unit by about a fingers width, moving the gear selector will confirm that this is what is fouling.

If the leg is still fixed firmly and you are sure that all the holding bolts have been released, then the problem usually lies in the upper gear shaft having siezed in the engine drive spline.

I suggest you take the motor to a repair shop because you have to get a bit physical with the lower unit and it is very easy to do some serious damage.

When winterizing you boat, do you change water pump in winter or spring?

Water pumps take a set in cold weather, so wait till spring. When winterizing you boat, do you change water pump in winter or spring? If you are the one winterizing and then commissioning your boat in the spring, do it in the spring but make sure you complete the items in the spring.

If a yard does the winterization and commissioning I would have them do it in the spring at commissioning.

It is kinda going to depend on what you want and what your boat needs and here's the big one - the dollars you wish to spend with a yard.

When I worked in Maine we changed the impeller with the winterization. Here in VA the same but occasionally the owner would make the decision to have it changed in the spring with additional work to be done prior to spring commissioning.

But the boat is always winterized.

How do you change the water pump on a 96 3.5l dodge intrepid?

think the water pump is behind the crank pulley but im not certain I've pulled apart the front end but I'm having a hard time getting the pulley off so I want to make sure the part im trying to pull off is not the wrong one.How do you change the water pump on a 96 3.5l dodge intrepid?your water pump is located in the front center of the engine behind the timing cover and is driven by the timing belt. The timing belt must be removed to service the pump and recommend changing the belt at the same time. the only special tool you will need is a puller to remove the crank pulley this can be rented at an auto parts store the rest comes apart with basic hand tools. I recommend buying a service manual for your car at the parts store you get the other items needed to change the pump it will give you a step by step procedure for changing your belt and pump. How do you change the water pump on a 96 3.5l dodge intrepid?Well as far as I can tell you may not have to remove the crankshaft pulley but I could be wrong. You will however have to remove the timing belt and you might as well replace it anyway since you're in this far. What is the going price to change a water pump and intake gasket? On a 91 Ford Explorer?

WOW... a 91 Explorer. The first year Ford came out with that SUV. I used to drive one. A rare 5-speed manual transmission. I was able to put 270,000 miles on it, without any major repairs. I had to replace the power steering unit and the clutch. When I replaced the clutch, I also replaced the rear seal gasket, since the transmission was taken apart anyway. I saved a lot of money. If I remember, it cost me about 700 dollars, parts included. Your job, I am just taking an educated guess, should be right about the same amount. What is the going price to change a water pump and intake gasket? But if you do it yourself, it might be just 50 bucks.

See the answer below. Changing all those parts is a CAKEWALK!!! I've changed PISTON RINGS while parked outside my storage locker, laying on my back in the gravel, when I was homeless. All professional mechanics are THIEVES! 300 dollars, my aass. How much would it cost to change a honda civic 92 dx hatchback timing belt and alternater belt and water pump?Man I gotta get Jersey to work in my shop, hes working for free at the rates he quoting.

Flat rate on your car is 2.8. So it's going to be 300 labor, the water pump is $40 and the timing belt and tensioner (you always replace tensioner it even comes with the new belt) is $70. So your looking at just over $400 for the job.

Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?

I had no coolant problemsWhy would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?Funny you should ask this.

I am currently doing the cylinder head on my Citroen, and while I am in there, I have just replaced the timing belt and water pump, even though they didn't really need it. The reason for this is, if they did fail, I would have to go through the same huge dismantling job as the cylinder head because they are in such an awkward place. Not worth the hassle, for a 20 pump.

Hope this answers your question. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt? They have to take the water pump off to get at the timing belt. If it looks worn, they put a new one on.Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt? The water pump is behind belt so while it is tore down that far just put a new one on so your not having to in couple weeks when it goes outWhy would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?hi.. honda is very common on this... the reason why they replace the water pump is that this pumps impeler wears out and will cause the engine to overheat. thats why as a rule of thumb when replacing the timing belt , since the parts are all exposed might as well do it now. until now honda has not improved on this. good luckWhy would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?If your water pump is driven by the cam belt ( a lot of engine are like this )

Then if you water pump fails it is just as bad as the cam belt breaking

So I would always recommend changing a water pump if it is cam belt driven. And I would always advise the customer of this first.

Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?Water pumps tend to %26quot;go out%26quot; after a predictable number of miles. They are hard to get at and the biggest expense to replacing them is the same labor/expense that is required to deal with a new timing belt. (The belt runs the water pump also). It is probably wise to change the pump at this time... but, they probably should have gotten your understanding so you wouldn't have the doubt issues you are feeling now. If they basically just charged you for the water pump... they probably saved you money in the long run... IF you were not planning of selling the car soon. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?In some cases the water pump is driven by the timing belt.

In these cases, it is prudent to change the pump, as if it seizes it will cause the timing belt to break, with catastrophic consequences for the engine. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?It is quite possible that the pump sounded noisy to a mechanic, or was starting to leak slightly, which cannot be seen until the cover is taken off to do the belt. There are a few cars which are suspect in terms of pump life, so if the mileage is high or the car old some people might replace it as a precaution. There is very little incentive to replace it for profit only. The extra time involved is minimal and the margin on a pump is not great.

Old mechanic. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?they may have identified a problem and it would have been the best time to do it while the cases were off .perhaps they should have rang you first?.Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt? The timing belt drives the water pump. Without knowing when the water pump fails, it's wise to change the water pump when changing timing belt because there are much disassembling before reaching the component. The mechanic is charging extra for the water pump, but saving you duplicated labor if the water pump do fail. A failed water pump can cause major engine problem. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?it's called preventive MaintenanceWhy would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?Replacing the water pump is the smartest move by the mechanic and he is actually trying to save you parts and labor cost and future problems by doing it at this time. If your water pump goes out in a month then the mechanic will have to remove the timing belt he just put on to get to the water pump. You will again pay for the same labor and you will also pay for new gaskets to do it all over again. This is the wise thing to do and your mechanic did it for your best interest and it will save you in labor cost. I would thank my mechanic for doing this for me and be happy that he just didn't put it back together without changing the water pump. Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?Believe it or not its to save you and them money. When you change the belt it will put more belt tension on a old pump which could lead to the water pump bearing going out and locking up the pump.If the pump locks up it wipes out the new timing belt and possibly the valves on you engine. So you need to thank them and not think that they ripped you off.Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?to bilk you of money, if it was not agreed upon before hand or you did not recieve a phone call about the extra repairs b-4 hand. which just means they did it without your permission, you can sue...........Why would a garage change the water pump on my car when they did the timing belt?to get more money out of you hoping you don't know anything about cars

Drain the coolant from the radiator or engine block into a clean drain pan. Some vehicles require that you remove one end of the lower radiator hose to drain the system. If the coolant is rusty, dirty or over two years old, dispose of it properly, and flush the system before replacing the pump, as contaminated coolant could cause failure of the new pump.

    2.

To remove the fan and fan clutch, start with the fan shroud (if you have one) and move it inward over the fan. Remove the fan bolts, and take the fan and shroud off together. If the vehicle has a fan clutch, you might want to consider replacing it at this time. Fan clutches should always be laid face down to prevent damage and assure proper operation. Check the fan for cracks, bent blades or other defects. Don't try to repair a damaged fan, always replace it.

    3.

Remove other components as needed to make the water pump accessible. These would include the belts, alternator, power steering pump, and air conditioning compressor. It is not always necessary to remove the hoses or wiring to these components most times you can just move them out of the way - simply place them out of the way. Consult your cars repair manual for specific instructions on engines where parts such as timing belts must be disturbed. Remove all heater and by-pass hoses that are connected to the water pump. At this time, remove any hose fittings that thread into the pump.

    4.

Remove the water pump attaching bolts, noting their lengths and positions for correct replacement. Remove the pump from the engine.

IMPORTANT: If the pump does not come off easily, check to be sure all the mounting bolts have been removed. Do not try to force it off. After the old pump has been removed, carefully clean all the old gasket material from the mounting surface of the engine. Also wire brush the threads of the water pump mounting bolts to pre-pare for reinstallation.

If required, transfer the studs for fan attachment from the old pump to the new pump. This is most easily accomplished by using the %26quot;double nut%26quot; method.

Is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold, to change the water pump on a 1999 oldsmobile alero?

nope your exhaust manifold is on the side of the engine where the water pump is in the front all you have to do is remove the radiator but make sure that you drain it( try to save as much anti-freeze if possible) once the radiator is removed the next step is to loosen the fan belt, remove the belt and remove the screws that is holding the fan blade remove fan blade

Or you can ignore all this what i have said and go out and buy a Chilton's auto book for your automobile it'll have step by step illustrations on how to change the water pump and other fun things to do.Is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold, to change the water pump on a 1999 oldsmobile alero? No, I have not specifically worked on that car but you will have to remove everything above the water pump and if I remember correctly you have to support the motor and remove the engine mount...I could be wrong but I am pretty sure this is what I remember. You should definately pick up a repair manual at your local parts store before you start this project.

EDIT: ignore the guy above me....the alero is a front wheel drive car, so the water pump is on the passenger side of the engine compartment, not the front and the radiatior is on the front....Is it necessary to remove the exhaust manifold, to change the water pump on a 1999 oldsmobile alero?Although I have not worked on that particular model I say that the exhaust manifold is not connected and therefore does not have to be removed (depending on cars the intake could be a different matter). I suggest to you, as I would to any %26amp; all who take the challenge of doing their own automotive work on a older vehicle, and that is you buy a step by step repair manual (such as Clinton's or Chilton's), which can save you alot of time and mistakes.

If I were you, I'd do it myself next time or take it to a REAL mechanic, the guys at places like you went to are all recent vo-tech grads that can't get a job in a real shop. You could have done this job yourself for under $100, INCLUDING the thermostat.Should goodyear change thermostat anytime a water pump is replaced?you got ripped off big time!

  • Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change?

    Hey all--

I just paid $900 at the Volkswagen dealership to get my timing belt, water pump, rollers, and air pump replaced. Is that a good deal? Also, how does the timing belt replacement relate to performance? I noticed my car was a little faster than before (maybe it's because I was driving another car for 2 days).Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change? You made a wise decision to have your car timing belt/water pump changed at the dealership as they are major components. I believe the $900 was well spent and will serve you well for many more years of safe driving. Unless the old belt was loose or slipping, thus possibly causing the valves to open at wrong timings, I don't think you will notice any difference in the car performance after the replacement, especially if it was a preventive maintenance at the recommended mileage. But I do believe you will feel some difference in terms of the engine smoother acceleration and responsiveness. The $900 spent can really do wonders sometimes, at least in your mind.Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change? It is a VW, so 900 sounds about right. I would've done it myself though, but that's just me. The belt/pump replacement will not change your performance.Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change? Here's my answer, not sure it is right, but right for me. After a certain time, I replace my timing belt. I may not always replace my water pump with my timing belt. Why, the water pump may go for another 100, 000 miles like it did in my last car. I don't see anything you did or replaced that relates to performance. I change things because the maintenance schedule calls for them to be changed. When I pull them off, sometimes they are good and sometimes not so good.Does performance improve after timing belt/water pump change? It makes your car not die. It prevents damage to the engine if you either overheat it because your water pump's died, or damage to the valves and lifters if the timing belt breaks. This is exactly the peventive maintenance the car needs to continue providing reliable transportation for you. I've heard some horror stories from people who have neglected to do this maintenance. They often need a whole new engine, or if they're lucky, just a new head for their engine. $4000 later they're fine.

So yeah, $900 was a bargain.

You have to remove the belts and hoses that go to the waterpump. Remove the bolts that hold it on, and pull the pump off.

Depending on how much room you have, you may have to remove the radiator to do this.

Remove any remaining gasket material from the engine block. Then replace the gasket and pump, and anything else you had to remove.

Replace the antifreeze you lost with a 50/50 mix of water and antifreeze.Would some one please tell me how to change the water pump on my stuiped car!!!???You just replaced the motor, but kept the old water pump???

How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?

According to the Gates Belts website (link below), you have an interference type engine whose valves and pistons collide causing major engine damage if the timing belt breaks. The belt is scheduled for replacement at 60,000 mile intervals and the water pump is driven off the timing belt. If you do the job yourself, you'll have no warranty on the work done, whereas a shop will give you at least a 90 day/ 4,000 mile warranty on both the parts and labor. That means you get the job done for free if the parts or workmanship fail soon after installation. However the total cost will be about $600, depending on whether the tensioner pulley and what other parts are replaced and whether you go to the dealer or have an independent shop do the work. How hard is it to change a water pump on a 02 vw golf 2.0.Do i need special tools?do i change the timing belt?If the pump is driven by the timing belt then you should replace belt and water pump together, it is a lot of work to get in there again so do them together. If you're not an advanced shade tree mechanic, take it in, timing belt/pump replacement is a big job, at the very least be sure to have a shop manual to follow. It is on average a 5 hour job, if not done properly you'll have to do it all over again.

  • What is involved in replacing a water pump in a 2002 Chrysler Sebring?

The dealership quoted me like 400 dollars in repairs using almost 10 hours of labor JUST for a frickin' water pump. I haven't had time to actually look at the car, but surely I can change a water pump in about 2. Anyone have ANY idea how this goes? I've changed pumps in older cars you could walk around in the engine compartment, but surely I shouldn't have to pull the engine to replace a common part. What is involved in replacing a water pump in a 2002 Chrysler Sebring?this depends on if it is a 3.2 or a 3.5 ohc. if it's a 3.5 then yes that is reasonable...as the water pump is driven by the cam belt. If it's a 3.2 then no...done both of them...the 3.2 is much easier. If it's a 2.7b then I'm not sure.

Start rocking the vice grips back and forth but mostly toward losening. the moment you detect the stud did move, begin to work it off by rocking and turning toward removal. continue with penetrant

  • How do I change a water pump on a 1989 Chevy Silverado. Two wheel drive 350 engine?

http://www.autozone.com/az/cds/en_us/090How do I change a water pump on a 1989 Chevy Silverado. Two wheel drive 350 engine?I take it you've never done this before. There's only 4 bolts holding the water pump on BUT... there are going to be other things that need to come off first. Here's my question- if you don't know how to fix it, how do you know what's wrong?

I'd suggest you get a tech manual if this is something you want to learn how to do. Typing it here is not going to take longer than doing the job and I can't show you pictures.

I took a look at the link the guy below me put in. It doesnt show you how to remove the fan, fan shroud, the belts (or the diagram to show you the routing of the serpentine belt) remove the old studs from the waterpump (as in the neat trick on how to get that done) that you should put in a new thermostat when you replace the pump, the proper mix of coolant to use, whether or not you're using dex-cool and which coolants will mix with it and will NOT mix with it etc.

I guess you can tell I've done a lot of these. It's not hard to do IF you have the tools, IF you have the time and IF you have the knowledge. It's even easier to screw it up if you don't know what you're doing.

You're going to need to do some reading if you want to do it right.

    Good Luck.

How do you change the water pump on a 66 Beetle?

Anyone? How do you change the water pump on a 66 Beetle?Well ya see, it's like this ... you really have to be prepared to replace a water pump on a '66 beetle.. and what i mean is ..you are gonna need the proper tools to do this job... like water pump pliers and make sure you get a large enough drain pan for all of the special coolant that is gonna be drained from the beetle... Some of these beetles were special and had very large coolant reservoirs....(5-6gals).

Now, once you have the correct tools you will need to raise the vehicle up from the front at no less than 20 degrees of rearward slope and make sure to use the proper lifting equipment and jack stands... now then once you have the beetle supported firmly on the stands, crawl under from the drivers side and pierce a hole in the special coolant reservoir, make sure to have the drain pan ready and also the approved reservoir service hole repair kit. This kit may only be available at your local AUTOZONE, if not call Volkswagen.. I am sure they will tell you what you need..

Now take you piercing tool (sharp punch) and begin to pierce the floor pan area directly in front and to the left of the transaxle. Don't get discouraged if the first attempt does not pierce completely throught to the reservoir. These older '66 beetles had a lot of metal in them and may require as many as 5-6 attempts.. Once the floor pan is pierced crawl back out from under the vehicle and pour some water in the rear floor area to assure the the holes are completely through..

If the water starts to leak out of the floor, you have successfully penetrated the reservoir. The next step is to call the local parts store and ask them to look up the water pump for the classic '66 beetle... At this point you may have to be persistant upon getting what you are asking for. Don't worry, if the first attempt doesn't work, just ask for the manager.

By now you may want to go the the local library and get the repair manual on one of these classic '66 beetles... there are some procedures that are hard to explain.. plus torque specs that must be followed to a %26quot;T%26quot;.....

If none of this gets you where you think you can do this repair by yourself .... Call your local IMPORT specialist and I am sure that they will be more than happy to LAUGH AT YOUR JOKE!!!!!

Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?

I have a 2000 vehical and have 130,000 miles and was wondering if I should change my timing belt and water pump together?Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?I would given the mileage, it'll save a breakdown later.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?Okay, what type of Vehicle do you have? You can google it and it may be on YouTube. But yes, you should be able to, when you change the timing belt you take off the belt tensioner / pulley and once you do that you should be able to change the water pump with ease. But usually with vehicles that age I'd change the belt and the pump while I'm at it.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?No...no need to replace both! If the water pump is working just fine why replace it? I'd only replace it if you have to remove it to get to the timing belt ( some cars you do...some don't). If that is the case...I'd have the mechanic ( or if I do it myself) replace all of the gaskets and any parts that normally need replacement by 100k miles...especially if you haven't had to replace them yet.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?Depends on the car. Some cars you must remove the water pump to change the belt so it is recomended for the extra few bucks. If it must be removed then i would change it.

rdShould you change your timing belt and water pump together? It depends on the car, in several models, like most mitsubishis, you have to take the timing belt off to change the water pump. So then it's an included operation and there's no extra cost associated with the labor to do the timing belt, it just makes it a convenient, cost saving time to do it. There's no rule about changing water pumps and timing belts together. If it's not an included operation there's no point to do them at the same time. The timing belt is good preventative maintenance but there's no need to change the water pump before it's showing signs, and there are plenty of them, that it's going to die.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together? Why are you keeping the NAME of your car a SECRET?!?!?! On many 4 cylinder engines, the water pump is used as a pulley for the timing belt, and so should be changed. Use only genuine coolant, timing belt, and pump from YOUR car-makers dealership. Otherwise, you may not get extended service from it. If your pump and belt were never changed before, you are extremely LUCKY. Most timing belts require replacing at 60-100,000 mile intervals. READ your MANUAL!!!!Should you change your timing belt and water pump together? On many cars it is time consuming to get to either part and since you would have to remove many of the same parts to get to either the timing belt or water pump it makes sense to change both while you are at it.

The difference to change both probably wont be that much more than just changing one of them and will save money down the road.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together? On Honda and Lexus, the dealer ALWAYS seems to recommend changing the water pump when the timing belt service is up. My dealer made it a standard thing. Well, yes, it is an opportunity to make money, but it doesnt 'hurt' to chenge it every 80k or so. I think the water pump is probably a lot more durable than that, and the timing belt job would probably be a lot cheaper if they didn't change the pump too.Should you change your timing belt and water pump together?I sure would. While the belt is off, half of the water pump job is done already. The pump is going to go soon anyway. Might as well kill two birds with one stone.

Go to an auto parts place like Pep Boys or Autozone. Try and find a place at a time where they aren't too busy. Oh and there are %26quot;core charges%26quot; where in theory it would work better if you could take your old one off first before you buy the new one, but as a practical matter, you probably are driving your crappy taurus leaking water to the shop to pick up the new pump, and then later bring back the old water pump after you change it.

And in the same place, you can find a Chiltons or similar shop repair manual for your 1996 Ford Taurus, that should have a more detailed step-by-step procedure. If you don't want to buy the manual, maybe also you could check out the necessary manual from your Public Library, they usually have the manuals around for older cars. How do i change the water pump on a 96 ford taurus?
