Mechanics labor rate to change water pump = '98 chevy cavalier?

What does the book say on how long it takes to change a water pump in a 1998 chevy cavalier. my mechanic says 7 hours....can that be right?Mechanics labor rate to change water pump = '98 chevy cavalier?its not hard to do it your self 7 hours sound to long for water pump see if you can get a fixed rate Mechanics labor rate to change water pump = '98 chevy cavalier?98 cavalier water pump 7 hours this means that i assume your car has a 2.3 or 2.4 litre engine and if that is the case, the water pump is located on the back side of the engine below the exhaust manifold and is driven by the timing chain, thus meaning that the whole front cover of the motor has to come apart along with the manifold to remove the pump, this is a very extensive repair and i believe that time is about what is given for flat rate in the labor manuals ,so from experience and to his credit i would say he is being honest with you and not trying to rip you off, your mechanic will probably be willing to show you where the pump is and what needs to be done for the repair....but if your car has a 3.1 or3.4 get your car out of there

  • Should i change the water pump with the timing belt?

i have changed my timing belt last week with all the tensioners but not the water pump.

my car has done 32000 mile and it is 5 years old (renault megane 2003 1.6)

the belt on this car should be changed each 72000 miles or 5 year and i decide to change it because it was due .

would u think that water pump would still work or soon it will become faulty?Should i change the water pump with the timing belt?Well, if you have the money go ahead...I am sure the pump would be a bit easier to replace with the belt off...but honestly there is no need. The water pump should easily last over 100,000 miles if you keep your antifreeze clean and you will be due for a new belt when the pump goes out anyway. Good luck with the belt change and have a good one!Should i change the water pump with the timing belt?change it just to be safeShould i change the water pump with the timing belt?If you are already going to have it tore down that far, you might as well while you are at it. You'll have to touch the Water Pump belt, unless it's serpentine. Then that's the belt that will have to come off.

It's a bit more complicated than that, but that's the basic premise.

You might want to have a qualified mechanic do it because it's going to need to have the gasket replaced and sealed.

  • How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?

How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump and on a 2000 Dodge Durango 5.9 4 wd with 109k.miles? Should I change the timing chain? If you can please give me a estimated Thank You!

I getting tired of old Vechiles LOLHow much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango? The cheapo water pump from oreillys is $46, the higher end one is around $70. As far as labor, Mitchell OnDemand calls for 2 hours flag rate time to change it out. You'll probably be looking at at least 1 gallon of antifreeze as well for what will be lost changing it out, and I would recommend changing the thermostat when you change the water pump. The 5.9 uses a timing chain, which I wouldnt recommend replacing, seeing as the vehicle has that low of miles on it. I'm not sure how much labor costs in your area, but the shop I work at charges $75 per flag rate hour. So if we were to do it, taxes and everything it would be right around $250. If you live in a big city, you'll probably be expecting to pay around $100 a hour for labor at a reputable shop. Good luck and hope this helps. How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?I do not know where you live, your best bet would be to find a reputable garage in your area and get an estimate from them. Most will give you a rough idea of what you are looking at.

I would not go to a Dealership, you would have to get a loan for a dealer to do the same job.

A friend of mine that has a 2006 Ford F-150 was given a quote of $1200 to do a tune up from a Ford Dealer, I sent him to the garage that does the work on all of my vehicles, he did everything the Dealership was going to do and charged him $300. So, shop around and see what kind of price you can get, see if you can find anything out about the garage about what kind of work they do, will they stand behind there work or not.How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?it can cost alot($900 +) to have someone do it.i would recommend doing it yourself if you know a little about cars. you have to remove the fan shroud and the radiator to get to the water pump. it isnt very hard, but can take a while.

you probably dont need to replace the timing chain unless you can hear it or know its going bad, as long as you change your oil regularly then you should be good. How much would it be in labor and parts to change a water pump on a new Dodge Durango?i wouldn't change the timing chain and gears in it not unless its over 150 thousand,on the labor and parts for all that it only cost about 600 bucks to get all that done and that's with parts and labor, its not that expensive on a 5.9, good luck.

It was supossed to have been changed last year but my alarm keeps going off and the temp light is on and the stream of water coming out is a trickle. I cleaned out the little valve the water line runs into. How hard is it to change a water pump on a Honda 50 hrs outboard 4 stroke?you already have good answers above me I just want to get Straight 2 the points because you are mr nice guy to us.How hard is it to change a water pump on a Honda 50 hrs outboard 4 stroke?Well it could be a blocked intake, and it could be a failed thermostat - but first step would be to replace the impeller. If the engine was supposed to have a new one a year ago then you have a straight forward job to do, and you knew it was due.

If the engine is fifty hours old then this should be the first service/tune from the dealer. Without knowing what size the engine is it is pointless suggesting more at this point.

Water pumps are not hard to do, and should be done every year, or two years at the most. The leg should be dropped every year as this will allow this service, and keep the bolts etc. free and allow you to examine for deterioration in out of sight places....

You should have a manual, if you do not then buy one - it is cheap insurance and you will always have it to refer to for any niggling questions.

Good luck. How hard is it to change a water pump on a Honda 50 hrs outboard 4 stroke?my advice to you is, go to your local library and look it up in the section where they have the Chilton type books, this will give you exact things to do in detail so you don't accidentally break something or get stuck....they are usually pretty informational..that's what I do when I need info..I bring a pen and a note book to write stuff down...most even have part numbers for you...

I know you can do it and save tons of money too, plus at least you know the job WILL be done right!

How long does it take to change a water pump on a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 and what all has to be taken off?

I have a 1969 Ford Galaxie and the thermostat stuck shut long enough to puke the water pump, and I am going to change it Thursday and I was wondering how long the labor takes and what all does it involve? How long does it take to change a water pump on a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 and what all has to be taken off?it takes around a 6 pack and time depends on what accy package your running and what engine package. How long does it take to change a water pump on a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 and what all has to be taken off? It's at least an hour and a half job. You will have to remove the rad, the fan and the pulleys. Some will tell you that you don't need to remove the rad, but if you follow that advice you will have a whole lot less room to work in. It certainly involves more work (disconnecting the hoses and the trans coolant lines) but if you're going to do the job, do it right the first time. And make sure you use the right %26quot;gasket in a tube%26quot; when you mount the new pump and allow it enough time to cure. How long does it take to change a water pump on a 1969 Ford Galaxie 500 and what all has to be taken off?The thermostat being stuck shut shouldn't have done anything to the waterpump... what's wrong with the pump? Does it make noise when the engine is running...? Is the car overheating? Lots of questions I have because this one doesn't make sense.

To answer the Q directly, the average mechanic should take 1-2 hours max depending on several factors and how talented they are. As was mentioned, some folks will take the radiator out and others will not. Since the 69 Galaxie is a large car (most folks these days would call it a %26quot;boat%26quot;), there should be tons of room under the hood to work on the car. Whether or not you can remove %26amp; reinstall the water pump without removing the radiator depends on a fan shroud, a clutch assembly on the fan and whether or not there's an A/C pump installed on the engine. A basic engine will be easiest to work on because there won't be any other parts getting in the way. A loaded engine might have other parts in the way that need to be loosened or removed to facilitate repairs. If so, that makes the repair take longer.

On a really basic engine, you won't actually need to remove the radiator to get the job done. However, I myself still recommend removing the radiator anyway. There are only 4 bolts holding it to the core support and the 2 hoses have one clamp each. The reason to remove it is twofold: 1) you cannot accidentally damage it with a bolt or wrench if it isn't in there and 2) you have that much more room to work. To me... it's just worth it to remove the radiator and not worry about it.

Bottom line here? It should take 1-2 hours max. There can be complications... if you have the wrong waterpump then you'll have to return to a parts store for the right one. This happens occasionally unless you take the old pump with you to the parts store (recommended!). The bolts can be frozen into the block... thus they can be a real problem to remove. Best advice there is to have a super high amount of patience. You might also damage the threads in the block when removing the waterpump bolts even IF you have patience. Corrosion is a real ***** sometimes... and waterpump bolts are notorious for becoming corroded over time. If the threads get damaged... it'll take time to repair the threads with a Heli-coil.

Also, you'll need to clean the mating surfaces for the gasket really well. Don't damage the block... just make sure all the remains of the old gasket are gone. Clean the metal with something that doesn't leave a residue like Acetone, lacquer thinner or an electrical parts cleaner. If the threads on the bolts look good, clean them really well and reuse them. If they're really bad, replace them! If you need to, go to a bolt supply shop in your area for replacement bolts. They don't need to be grade 8... grade 5 will work just fine. Just make sure they're not cheap, foreign made bolts with no plating on them. Also, remember what holes the bolts came from... some will be of a different length than the others. Draw a little diagram for yourself on a piece of cardboard and punch some holes in it to hold the bolts. That way, they won't get mixed up.

Lastly, it's wise to chase the threads in the block with the right sized tap. That cleans out any gunk or sealer from the threads and allows the bolts to be replaced with success. Also clean the threads with a non-residue degreaser or the previously mentioned electrical parts cleaner. A spray can works best, just blow out the holes afterwords with a healthy blast of air. When replacing the bolts, use an anti-seize on the bolt threads. Use just enough to do the job... don't go overboard. Also, depending on the engine, you might need to use gasket sealer on the threads of one or two bolts. Why? Because the bolt protrudes into the water jacket. Fail to use gasket sealer on those bolts and you might end up having a small leak. It should be obvious if the bolt does need sealer... because you'll see sealer on the bolt when you remove it, it'll be rusty looking or discolored compared to the other bolts AND because if you have a shop manual? It'll tell you so :-) Remember though... don't use both anti-seize and gasket sealer on bolts. Use one or the other. Water jacket protruding bolts ONLY get gasket sealer. All others get only anti-seize.

    Best wishes!

How do I change out a 94 firebird water pump is it hard```?

I have had this water pump changed 2 times in 5 years is this normal for this car? It has a v6 motor. How do I change out a 94 firebird water pump is it hard```?1. Remove any radiator shroud, or any cowl obstructing the fan, radiator, and water pump.

    2. using a pair of large pliers, take off the clamp on the lower radiator hose at the water pump and drain the coolant into a container. Make sure the motor is COLD, room temp, when you do this.

    3. Remove the other hose.

    4. Remove the cooling fan using an air hammer or a large adjustable wrench. This part is tricky, unless your fan is bolted on with 10 mm bolts, then you lucked out.

    5. For step 4, leave the belt on, it will make it easier to remove the fan.

    6. If you have a V-8 LT-1, then you have 4 13 mm bolts. Be careful not to damage your distributor which sits under the pump (nice design GM)

    7. Using a razor blade, remove any gasket on the inlet and outlet on the block.

    8. Apply a thin layer of gasket sealer on the gaskets for the new pump.

    9. Install the pump, and its bolts. Use locktite if you have some on the bolts, medium strength. Tighten the bolts to about 90 in/lbs

    10. install the pully, and fan. (again, tricky)

    11. Install the belt.

    12. put lower radiator hose back on (leave off upper)

    13. pour 1/2 a bottle of Dex-cool coolant in the radiator

    14. fill bottle up with 1/2 water, 1/2 coolant, and pour it into the reservoir.

    15. If necessary, get new bottle of coolant, and pour it into the UPPER RADIATOR HOSE, this will help bleed air out of the system.

    16. keep filling upper hose, and radiator until it stops bubbling down and basically overflows.

    17. install upper hose.

    18. make sure the radiator is full and system has no air pockets. Check to see if the upper radiator hose inlet has a bleeder valve. If it does, use a pair of pliers and open it, and watch coolant in radiator drop, then fillit up again. The V-6 has one, not sure about V-8.

    19. put radiator cap on, and resevoir cap.

How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?

my car is leaking anti-freez from what look like to be the head on the back side of the block but i was told that it most likly is the water pump. I just hade the water pump changed last year by a friend. So i dont know how to replace it. It looks like the housing for the water pump is realy big, looks like it covers alot of the motor by the pullys.any help would be coolHow to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?I have a grand am 3.1 v6 and I had the same problem and it is not the waterpump, its a blown intake gasket which is very common on this engine , as a matter of fact it has blown it twice in 142,000 miles, better get it fixed immediately or you will be replacing the engine shortly, check your oil for water as thats where it will go.The cost of the repair is around $600.How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?The water pump on my 3.1 is located on the front right corner of the block (standing at the passenger side). If you have coolant leaking from the back side of the motor it is not the water pump. Are you sure that it's coming from the block and not from a heater hose? Your heater hose's go in through the lower-middle of fire wall behind the motor(be sure to check the metal lines as well). How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?If it is leaking from the back side of the block then it is more than likely not the water pump. The water pump only leaks from its mating surface to the engine block, or most commonly, through a drip hole located directly under the water pump drive shaft. A leak on the back side could be a blown head gasket. You should verify where the exact leak is before you start replacing a bunch of stuff. How to change the water pump pontiac grand am 3.1 V6?There is a weep hole on the bottom of all water pumps, this lets you know that the bearing in the water pump is worn out by dripping a small amount of coolant. Most auto parts stores will rent or let you use a cooling system pressure tester, which will pressurize your cooling system and let you look around the engine without it running or being to hot to get close to. There are plenty of manuals that will walk you through changing the pump, its really not too hard.

How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Chrysler 300M?

Weap seal is starting to leak and getting some noise from the water pump. These cars are not as easy as a 1969 Camaro to change the water pump. Can you please give me some guidance? Thx in advance. How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Chrysler 300M?It's easier than you think. Pull front covers off under hood that cover radiator area. One is a plastic guard and under that is the metal support. Pull electric fan out by onbolting it from sides and 2 clips on top and eletrical connector. Now you have room to work. Loosen belts by losening bolt in center of pulley then loosen them by turning adjustment bolt. pull off belts then pull off these pullies with their brackets as one unit off front cover. Take off front covers by taking off 10mm bolts. Crank area has a triangle shaped plate and you can and just loosen bottom 10mm bolt and take off the two above. now slide cover up and you can see water pump. Set cams on their marks for reference, they have a dot on cams and a slot on housings. loosen timing belt tensioner on bottom of engine and evenly pull bolts to get slack on timing belt about one inch should be enough. now you can pull pump off and slide it out being carefull not to let belt slip on cams and lose timing. install the same way, then slowly turn each bolt up on hydrolic tensioner to ease tensioner center pin back to position. make sure timing marks are ok then put everthing back by reverse order. Or you can also pull radiator and bottom crank pulley with a 3 jaw puller and replace belt with new one. This involves pulling out tensioner also. tensioner can be collapsed in vice slowly then use suitable pin to go through cener pin and its case to keep it collapsed, set on new belt and pull pin after tensioner is installed to set belt tension. I hope this helps, Iv'e done this on a few 3.5 litres my self. GOOD LUCK.How do you change the water pump on a 2001 Chrysler 300M?Depends..how patient are you? Good tool selection? In 1969 all water pumps could be seen by opening the hood. can't say that now. Let a good independant shop or a dealer do it. If something goes wrong, it's on their back, not yours.

Just common wrenches and sockets

How to change a water pump on a 1994 Saturn SL2?TAKE IT TO A QUALIFIED repair shop you have to mess with the timing on some of those damn saturns to change the water pump . Alittle hint if you have over 70,000 miles on that engine get a new timing belt put on it as well . if that belt breaks it will bend every single valve in your head , and its very pricey to have repaired. not to mention all the bolts that hold every thing together are single use only. it states that in black and white in a saturn repair manual.

How do you change a water pump on a 89 accord LXi?

I am using the Haynes Manual, however the book shows it very simply. When i look in the engine, i have to remove three belts just to get to the water pump. Replacing the pump should be relatively straight forward. Getting to it is the problem.

Reason why i want to change it, is because my car makes a rough knocking/gurgling sound when i accelerate or idle at a high rpm, and i think that my current water pump is clogged up and not allowing coolant to get through the engine block.

Any suggestions out there? How do you change a water pump on a 89 accord LXi?if you hear a knocking sound it might be the idler pulley, not the water pump. If it is the water pump it should have been replaced when you replace the timing belt at approx 55k miles. You have to remove the timimg belt to replace the water pump. It is a major repair bill if you have someone do it.How do you change a water pump on a 89 accord LXi?If the water pump was the problem, you would see the temperature rise on the engine. I doubt this is the problem. • Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?

How often do water pumps and their gaskets last? Can It wait until the next timing belt change? My car has 60,000 and is due to have the timing belt done but due to the high price of the job I was wondering If I could skip the water pump for now. What happens if the water pump fails? Thank you.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Guy above never really answered the question. So here goes..

No.. you do not need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt. You can, while you are in there. It saves you the cost of the labor, you only pay for the part that way.

Hope that helps!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?Water pumps and there seals last quite along time with regular maintenance. Some times, the life or your vehicle! You water pump wont fail cause your changing the timing belt. I would just have it cleaned out and re-fitted to your car after the timing belt is done. No need to worry about it.

If it does fail (witch it shouldn't) your car would over heat as it would not be pumping the coolant through your engine block to keep it cool.

Thanks!Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?I'm not sure what the previous responder meant by proper maintenance on a water pump and gasket. Other than changing the coolant there is very little you can do the maintain a water pump. There are lubricants available but since it is a sealed bearing they are basically useless.

Most of your repair cost on a timing belt is labor, which will be repeated if you have to have the water pump done later. The days of lifetime water pumps are gone, and since you got 60K on this one I'd replace it and you should be fine for the next 60K. Remember, if it goes (and since it's buried you probably won't know until it fails completely) and you don't recognize it immediately; you'll be paying for a rebuilt engine. It's a great investment.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?If you do a regular maintenance for the water pump it will work for many years in your car ,so you can skip it for now even if you will do an over all repair of your engine.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt? No. At 120k , it mignt be a worthwhle preventive idea, if it's one that takes a lot of labor to get at. A simple car w/o AC or PS, it's usually not that big a deal to get at as needed - when it starts to drip.Do you really need to change the water pump when changing the timing belt?the gasket will last until it starts to leak thats when u need to change it

What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?

My car is a 1997 Toyota Avalon that was recently tuned up. It is a car in perfect mechanical condition until recently when I had my timing belt and water pump changed. The engine light is on and the idle is rough. An Auto Zone diagnostic test determined that there is misfiring in cyclinders 1,3 and 5. Could this be related to the timing belt change, and will it cause damage to the engine? Of course the mechanic that did the work has closed shop and disappeared. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Yes, that sounds exactly it. Especially since it involves all the cylinders on the same side of the engine, which I'm guessing is a V-6. Sounds like they slightly miss timed the cam for that set of cylinders. As far as damage goes, if it hasn't hurt the engine yet, it probably won't. That doesn't mean you should continue to drive it. I'd look into having someone re-do the timing belt. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?timing is off and valves are worped thats why you dont have any compretion it will idel rough if it is just a hair offWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?Make sure that the plug wires are on correctly and in the correct order and check the plug gap it should be 0.44 and the timing is 10degrees btc couldn't find the firing order but some one should have it make sure that all of this is correct then if you are still having this problem then go back to whoever done the work lots of luck!!!!!!!!!!What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? The timing is off a little bit. Sometimes the timing belt stretches a bit after it gets put on (a competent mechanic should know this) and the timing gear is now probably off about a tooth. It won't really hurt the engine, but the engine won't run as smoostly as it should and you won't be able to pass an emissions test with it that way. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?it sounds like a timing issue i am not sure if the engine in that car is a interferance engine or not you could have possible bent valves if it is my advice would be to seek a qualified mechanic i hope this will help the right cam is probably off 2 teethWhat causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change?the timing belt was probably installed incorrectly and needs to be fixed asap. and yes it will damage your engine if left alone and you are driving a lot. What causes a rough idle and engine light after timing belt and water pump change? It's definetly a timing problem. Get if fixed quick...
